it doesnt say that the component comes with it (the hauppauge one i presume it does ?)

It comes with a double sided one but you'll need to buy another one to hook your ps3/xbox up to it.

    Here's a checklist of Qs

Do you want to view in HD?
then either the HD PVR, Roxio, AverTV, or BlackMagic products are for you. Dazzles or EazyCap are SD Only
Do you want to record in HD?
Roxio drops off the list, HD PVR, AverTV or Black Magic products
    Do you need HDMI?
Only AverTV or Black Magic Products can capture HDMI (but see below)
Are you recording from PS3 via HDMI?
All HDMI content is HDCP encrypted..
You will need to strip the HDCP (thru game switch or similar) or find firmware for the device to remove the restriction.
HDCP stripping works for both AverTV or BlackMagic HDMI.
HDCP restriction removal only works for AverTV
not tried HDMI from xbox - game content should be non-HDCP encrypted
Do you need/want to record in 1080p?
AFAIK only the Blackmagic products can record in 1080p..
Upto 30fps for the Inentsity products (Pro, Shuttle and Extreme) and upto 60fps on the H264 Encoder.
Do you need/want to record on a laptop?
this rules out PCIe cards, leaving the Roxio, PVR HD, Intensity Shuttle/Extreme and H264 Encoder via USB2/USB3 or Thunderbolt.
For Intensity products - you require a very fast harddisk - check the speedtest first by downloading their software. The others all transmit H264 over USB, so much less.
IMHO the only real solutions for laptop are Roxio, PVR HD, and H264 Encoder

A final note - all devices can record component. So if HDCP is an issue you can still record analogue video over component with all devices and this has no restriction, other than resolution/frame rate ;)

From that you should be able to select the one that fits you best - and then find the cheapest.
I think the order of cost is...
    • AverTV capture HD (can be found for €75ish)
    • Roxio - €100????
    • Intensity Pro - €162 + shipping
    • Intensity Shuttle - €165 + shipping
    • Hauppage Colossus - €169
    • Hauppage PVR HD - €170/199??
    • Intensity + HDCP Stripper - about €270 + shipping
    • Intensity Extreme - €243 + shipping
    • H264 Encoder - €390 + shipping
    • H264 Encoder + HDCP Stripper - €490 + shipping

Nope, they're not. I record Xbox HDMI no problems at all.

Also, not sure where you're getting those Intensity prices from, both Pro and Shuttle still retail for $200 in the US, you'd be lucky to get it for under €170 over here :/

I went with the hauppage EU webstore http://www.hauppauge.eu/boutique_us/liste_produits.cfm?type=8&code_lg=lg_us&num=0 which says €199. I didn't look at the shipping cost. Have they gone up in price maybe??

Your right - I forgot to add UK VAT.
Added the UK VAT to the prices above from http://markertek.co.uk
Cheapest and best place I've found for BlackMagic Design stuff

Also - there is one more device - the Hauppage Colossus.
Don't know too much about it - but is €169 on Hauppage webstore.

No, the green one comes with the cables, that one you will need to buy an xbox/ps3 to component for (but they're v common, I've bought one I needed in a hurry in a big Tesco).
