Questions regarding flying to Amsterdam with a DSLR

    Hello all,
I'll be flying to Amsterdam with my DSLR with Ryanair, and I've a few questions:

Does the airport x-ray machine cause any damage to the camera and/or the memory cards?
On the way back, would it cause the memory card to fail in any way, and/or pictures to be wiped?
Should I be prepare for an hassle caused by the DSLR in the airport?

Does anyone know of any places in Amsterdam that I should avoid in Amsterdam with a camera, aside from the obvious window shopping places?

Is there anything that I should be aware of in general?

Also, is there a shop in Eindhoven of in Amsterdam that I can get a battery charger for my 450D, as I understand that they use a different voltage than what is used here in Ireland?

Cheers for any info, it'll be my first time bring the DSLR abroad, and would like to find out in advance of any hiccups that I may encounter.

I'll be getting stoned in the cafes over there, but plan to not have my camera with me when doing so.

Yeah, you can get great shots if you simply go out and shoot and try and get over the paaaraanoia :)

Shouldn't be any problem as regards transporting it, fear of cards getting wiped or whatever. It's generally not a problem.

Why not bring a spare battery rather than go looking for a charger that you'll probably only use once? If you're only going for a short time then you'll surely have enough battery power for 700+ photos?

DON'T attempt to use the camera in the Red Light/Window areas. The Camera will join loads more of them in the bottom of the canal and you'll end up nursing bruises for the remainder of your Holiday.

Other than that , Amsterdam is pretty much like any big city, just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine.

DSLR's are fine with X-Ray's at much higher levels than they use in Airports. There can be some concern with film, but only when using high ISO films.

Never had any issues, even when travelling with six DSLR's and lenses. As long as it goes through the scanner and does not contain contraband you will be OK.

They use 220Vac, just like Ireland. The only difference is the power plugs & sockets. They use the EU Standard Plugs rather than the UK Standard as used in Ireland. Just get a converter & you will be OK all over Europe.

To be honest, that will be you major problem. More bad experiences with them than any other problems travelling. Could you not have used a proper airline?

Just in relation to this, I felt I should chime in and say I've flown with Ryanair six times with a Lowepro Computrekker filled with gear and never had even a slight issue (it was carry on).

What's the deal with camera usage in the red-light areas, out of curiousity? I'm not too interested in Amsterdam so know nothing of the place, but I'd have assumed the popularity of it's red light district means it would be fairly bustly and tourist-filled (thus generally safe enough)?

Ignore anybody that offers to take your picture for you. :D

I had this a long time ago when I was there for a weekend, sitting at a table outside a coffee shop when a scruffy lad spotted the camera on the table and offered to take our picture, I agreed (or didn't offer any resistance...) and he slowly backed away from us while looking through the viewfinder.
Within those ten or so paces he must have assessed the actual value of the camera (ageing P&S) and so he just took the picture and tossed the camera back to me. :pac:

No-one that we go with suffer from paranoia. Or any other oddities. If they did, they wouldn't be going with us.

The zoom lense that I use is a Sigma, which unless the batteries are above a certain percentage, the lense gives me an error. And i find the lens tends to take a bit of juice. And me being trigger happy doesn't help.

I'll have two batteries in the camera, fully charged, and another two spare. Although they should last me, I hate running low on batteries.

They cost about €150 more to fly to Amsterdam. I checked.

Lowepro ftw! Have a Slingshot myself and intend to carry it on the place, as I wouldn't trust the baggage handlers with it!

If you are on a street full of sex shows, and you take a camera out, the camera will be removed from your person, as they probably fear you'll take photos and jerk off to them at home, as opposed to paying to go into their sex shows, and jerk off in the boots. And as people are usually stoned, and/or aware they are in a dodgy place, and thus won't say anything when their camera is taken off them.

    /edit
Was speaking to one of the lads here from Holland, and it seems it's also due to the women wanting privacy, as a lot of them only do the sex shows for maybe 6 months before going back to their normal lives, and don't want the world outside of the RLD to know how they got their money. Many of them use the money to fund college, etc.
Ignore anybody that offers to take your picture for you. :D
I ain't stupid. Me and my mate are both the heavy-metal-loving shaved-head bearded 6-foot types, so hopefully people won't try to be stupid with me.

your camera in its pouch will be counted as carry on luggage, so maybe put it into any bag of duty free etc that you buy.

As far as I am aware the voltage is the same there as here, you just need an adapter to go from 3 pin to 2. bought in any Tesco or Woodies here before you go

I find this funny, as the adapter currently needs an adapter to use the two pin in a three pin connection, so no adapter may be needed. WOO-HOO :D
