Dublin City vs. Citywest

I was hoping some of you gentlemen could give me some help.

I have recently taken up golf and was hoping to join a club soon. Unfortunately most of the clubs around Dublin are out of my price range and the two that seem to meet the variables of cost and location for me are the two in the thread title.

I was just hoping there are some people out there that have played both and could let me know what they like/didn't like about each course and which one they prefer.

    Much obliged.

i havn't played Citywest but i'd steer clear of dublin city, i played it once and it ****. crossing main roads, tee off over greens, boggy ground, mats for tee boxes. poor greens. 5 balls playing in front of you.

I would wholeheartedly second this summary of Dublin City. You left out one thing - if its sunny, you get the great site of some of the lads taking their Ireland soccer jerseys off and showing their upper bodies.

I dont know about Citywest, though I remember a thread or two on it a while back, though that might have be wrt its finances. Any recommendations you get should be verified by yourself - make sure you like the course, and that the atmosphere around the place is what you are looking for. There is a good recent thread on here re what entrance fees/subs clubs in the Dublin area are charging - why dont you shortlist a few for a visit?

Where are you based and how far are you willing to travel?

I've played both and I wouldn't join either to be honest.

Thank you for the replies so far. The general concencus appears to be avoid Dublin City course anyway.

Lawman, I am based in Sandyford and I would be willing to travel 30 mins in any direction. I have had a look at the websites for a couple of courses in the Wicklow direction but the majority of them seem to have a joining fee and that is something I was hoping to avoid.

Might be 40 minutes away from you, but I'm considering joining Tulfarris now. No joining fee, €1500 per year for my self and the mrs together. That's full membership, green fees, etc covered for €750 each.

Have you looked at this thread?

My playing mate is based Sandyford too and we joined Rathcore early this year.

About a 40 minute drive he reckons and he hasn't complained too much yet.

Great course and a great club. Tees are easy to get as there are only 300 approx members. At €859 its a good deal but you have to take your own travel into account.

We spent ages looking for clubs at a good price around Dublin and if Citywest is your budget then my advice would be Rathcore.

If you look at my post regarding what we spend on golf, you will see travel is no longer cheap. 30 minutes is roughly 50km and thats 100km per game which could work out at over €10 per game multiplied by the number of times you play ........ €10 x 30 games = €300. Add in general wear n tear on your tyres / engine and you may get an idea of what Im talking about (and I know you will probably car share).

Glencullen would be a great starter course for you and is on offer at €695 till march 2013. Also, Dublin Mountain is within your 30 mins and may be worth a visit. Locally Stackstown is near to you but may be too dear and too tough if you are only taking up the game.

As for Wicklow, again travel comes into play but Macreddin / Arklow / Wicklow / Druids Heath are all open to membership ....... however you want to enjoy your golf as you start out, so dont join a course that is too tough, you can always progress next year.

Dont panic and play all the courses, your decision will be easy as you will soon know which ones you dont like.

    Best of luck.

Again, thank you for the additional posts. I appreciate the feedback.

I agree with what Dtoffee is saying about playing a few of them first (the weather would want to improve considerably first).

I also came across a good deal on the South County GC website so may look into that as well.

I was going to suggest south county - decent course, nice countryside. Seems like a welcoming membership, from what i can gather

+1 on the above plus it has very good practice facilities with a nice short game area. Played it around this time last year on views of joining but price was the deciding negative factor, that and the €300 bar levy. If they're offering a good deal this year then it's definitely one to consider.

Dublin City is one of the worst courses i have ever played!

I dont mind City west. Maybe its a Bit marmite as its short enough with a fair few par 3s. I always enjoy a round there good few nice holes and generally in nice condition.

I'd be reluctant to pay any cash to citywest in light of it's current financial uncertainty

    +1 for Blessington lakes.

Very friendly members with competitions on every weekend, super greens, course is tough enough though especially the 2/10 hole, a super par 4.

Super course, great members, and very very reasonable membership. Check it out :D

I was a member of Dublin City in most of my teens. One par 3 aside on the back 9, it is an interesting, quirky but fun course to play. Bit of a trek though and the road can be very dodgy at times especially in the winter. Staff (owners aside, not keen on junior golf at least at the time!) and members are very friendly.

Now a member of South County though and love it there. If you can afford it I'd recommend South County.

Played Blessington Lakes with a couple of members over the summer. Again, was an interesting course to play and for the price of membership might be worth looking into if money is tight. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 9th are all very decent holes. Just don't go into that valley when playing the 2nd and 9th though :pac:

I actually played South County last weekend and think that is where I am going to join.

Well to put an end to the thread, I went with South County GC. Full years, 7 day membership for €1039 and it's only 15-20km from where I live.
