There has been some criticism of the World Rankings and I think it was Brent Pope suggested that they be reset at the conclusion of a World Cup to avoid situations like Wales being ranked 7th after losing the Bronze Final.

So, we obviously have the top 4 defined, but how would you assign the places up to 20 thereafter?

    My go:
    1. New Zealand
    2. France
    3. Australia
    4. Wales
    5. South Africa
    6. England
    7. Ireland
    8. Argentina
    9. Samoa
    10. Scotland
    11. Italy
    12. Tonga
    13. Canada
    14. Fiji
    15. Georgia
    16. USA
    17. Japan
    18. Romania
    19. Namibia
    20. Russia

I think putting us below England is madness. They've been really really poor. I also think Scotland and Italy are better than Samoa.

    1. New Zealand
    2. France
    3. Australia
    4. Wales
    5. South Africa
    6. Ireland
    7. England
    8. Argentina
    9. Scotland
    10. Italy

Problem with the rankings in rugby is that there are 2 tiers.

Tonga are officially 9th now but don't have another fixture scheduled til next August against Fiji, thus will fall out of the top 10 quickly and will have maybe 2 games against the 'usual top 10' until the next World Cup.

None of the European teams outside the big 6 can make a big move either as they only play each other and have no promotion/relegation path into the 6N.

Rankings work in other sports because Spain play Cyprus; Joe Bloggs lines up against Tiger Woods; John Higgins and Rafa Nadal play unglamous first round matches against qualifiers in every tournament.

To answer your question ; it doesn't matter.

In my opinion it's very hard to disagree with a system that states:

The exchanges are based on the match result, the relative strength of each team, and the margin of victory, and there is an allowance for home advantage.

You shouldn't take these as copper fastened. They are just a guide at the end of the day.

    1. New Zealand 1st
    2. France 2nd
    3. Australia 3rd
    4. Wales 3rd
    5. South Africa 3rd
    6. Ireland 3rd
    7. England
    8. Argentina
    9. Samoa
    10. Italy/Scotland

This is the way I see it, NZ are 1st for winning but France for me a very close 2nd. 3rd is Aus, Wales, South Africa and Ireland.

It wouldn't be fair or realistic to rate Wales or Aus as being better than Ireland (putting Wales in 3rd spot and Ireland in 6th is just stupid)

    heres why...

lets remember WE beat Aus, Wales got beat by SA! so going into the 1/4th we had more wins than Aus and Wales. Then Aus beat Wales in the 3rd place matchup... so to say Wales are much better or did much better in the world cup is farcical, the only big team they beat was us! and beacuse we beat Aus in the world cup, in the SH and won our group you can't say Aus (the 3 place team) are better either.

This matter will be fixed at the 6 nations

Except it will matter in a year or so, when the seedings are decided for the next world cup. At that stage, the gap between eighth and ninth or fourth and fifth is going to be massive. If we manage to get up to fourth, we could avoid the tri-nations sides at the next pool stages. If we were to slip to ninth, as we almost did in 08, we're f**ked.

Gone with SA above Wales because Wales unfortunately only beat one top tier nation, Ireland. Yes they had 14 against France but they blew their own chances with the kicks missed.

its mad that tonga actually beat the team now ranked 10 places above them, is that the biggest margin in the after math of a rugby tournament?
