Engine cutting out - help needed

I took my 1984 VW Transporter for a spin this afternoon when it started pulling. If i changed to a lower gear and floored it, the engine would catch up for a bit then lose power. Eventually, when the revs got low enough, it stalled.
I did notice a bit of a funny smell coming from the engine, like burning.
I waited an hour and then turned it over. It started fine, but cut out after about 10 seconds. I tried again and gave it some gas, but still cut out. Tried again, but no matter how much gas I gave it, it would always cut out.
I was worried the smell was oil so checked that, but plenty there.
Any suggestions what I should be looking at?

sounds like you may have a fuel issue. what engine has it?

    It's a 1.9 petrol engine.

I managed to get it going but the only way I could stop it from cutting out was by keeping the revs very high, which suggests to me that there might be a problem with fuel getting to the engine.

Not know anything about engines, but am a bit of a have-a-go-harry, I'd like to know which parts of the engine I need to look at first

Oh, i have my Hayne manual at the ready

I'm going to presume it's a carb engine. I'm not familiar with old vw engines but if it runs at high rpm then fuel delivery to the carb is prob ok. You may have a problem with your carb or possibly an air leak. It may even have a spark issue. It's impossible to say for sure without seeing it.
