What good is 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th place in the Presidential race?

So we now know that either Michael D Higgins or Sean Gallagher will be the next president of Ireland, but what becomes of the candidate who comes 2nd in the race? is there any kudos at all in coming 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th, or is it a case of being an 'also ran' who fades back into their previous life after the defeat next Thursday?

If Sean G wins, and Michael D loses, then he may well probably go into a retirement home in the near future, and if the reverse happens Mr Gallagher will almost certainly be back in the next series of Dragons Den. Gay Mitchell will return to his old FG job and be just as bullish as ever, McGuinness will go back home & resume his job in Stormont, Mary Davis will probably be appointed to yet another board, Norris will go back to the Senate, and Dana may will resurrect her MEP career?

So is there any kudos in losing the election?

Polling well is good for morale and can set up the campaign team for next time around. It also means the candidate gets their expenses paid.

Second means not having a clown like Enda Kenny telling you where you can go and what you can say

These campaigns spent hundreds of thousands each
A decent result and hit a target will get their expenses paid, a lot of money at risk for the teams

What a price to pay though, if you don't win, all the dirt dug up (real dirt, exaggerated dirt, & manufactured dirt) and then you lose the race, and quite possibly the deposit too :(

12.5% of the vote returns your election expense.

So Dana & Mary Davis can certainly say goodby to their election expenses!

no, it not 12.5%, its a quarter of a quota at any stage in the count. The way the polls are going its unlikely that the lowest 4 will get their expenses.

What good?, you ask OP, no bloody good is the answer.

This will go down as the weirdest election we've had, a circus, with too many candidates, very little quality and what little quality and genuineness there was wasn't allowed come out in the circus of it all.

Well, it could have been worse, Sen L O'Murchu could have been in the mix as well, or Bertie, or young Dev.

Hopefully the next time out they'll be able to decide between themselves who should win and stop annoying us. This is a tone of exasperation with them all, generally I'd be in favour of elections and choice.
