RTÉ: how much does it spend paying people who appear on its shows?

(Overall I think RTÉ - despite the enormous indefensible waste on ridiculous salaries to muppets like Finucane and Duffy - gives us the best and most informative/educational shows on radio, and after TG4 the most educational tv programmes. It's a world better than TV3 or any of that ineffably tabloid dross. Shudder.)

However, I was talking to a (sound) fella last night and I was telling him that I heard him on the radio the other morning. As the conversation got going he told me that RTÉ pay him when he appears with his "expert" views. He spoke for less than 5 minutes and got @ €100 for it. "What!", I said, and he laughed. He doesn't need the money and would talk for Ireland, but much, much more importantly every time he's on the radio or tv he gets more publicity and his career does even better. So, why is RTÉ paying him in addition to giving him an unparalleled platform to promote his own career for free? Why aren't they charging him?

Now I'm wondering are all those self-promoting shítehawks on the Pat Kenny Show, Morning Ireland, Derek Mooney, Drivetime and all the rest actually paid by RTÉ, rather than paying RTÉ for the unparalleled free publicity?

I could start making a list now of these enormous windbags that repeatedly show up on RTÉ radio and TV, but I'm bound to miss some.

Question: How are these payments justified, and where can we find out how much RTÉ spends paying all of these "commentators" and "experts" for promoting them?

The fact that Joe Duffy gets paid at all is probably the biggest shocker!

RTÉ is corrupt. holding each others hands the whole way through the recession.

who in their right minds would pay joe duffy, pat kenny, Eamonn Dunphy and the likes?

they all deserve to be hung. each one has a 6 figure salary, work a few hours a week, and we listen to them lecture politicians about pay cuts? they all also happen to have questionable intelligence, if any at all.

how many times have we seen rte people on the late late? whats that about? theyre just paying themselves the whole time while the country falls apart.
rte is outrageous. it should actually be investigated.

    /rant :pac:

Is €100 a flat fee regardless of the time they speak?

Thousands of people tune it to his show eveyday,so to say that he entertains isnt really a false statement is it?

Its like Ray D'arcy, the majority of people give out about him,but the reality is that the same people will listen to him as well.Just one of those things

Anyway yeah, thats all i had to say.

Please, whatever you choose to do today just please,

    stay safe.

Big stars get from minimum 5K to 10K per appearance so I'm told.

I realise that some people find him entertaining. I don't, so I don't think I should be contributing in any way towards his bloated salary. I say bloated, because if salaries were funded by commercial interests only then he and the rest of them would likely be hit with a huge reduction in pay.

All in all, I don't think RTE should be funded by the state whatsoever. It's a viable commercial entity, and would probably improve if not for the tax-payer propping up the dead wood.

    none really tbh

type the late late show in search bar and you will get a well documented list of the guests for each show and you will have a great laugh reading them threads trust me...

Good one. So RTÉ paid €130,000 to guests who appeared on, and received enormous publicity from, the Late Late Show alone. I could understand them paying some legend of world society who doesn't need the publicity, but I don't recall any of them making an appearance on the Late Late. Why are people being paid by RTÉ when it is RTÉ which is helping them to promote their careers/sell their books, films, etc?

Is there any chance of us getting a detailed breakdown of the money which RTÉ pays in total to all the people who appear as "commentators" and "guests" on all RTÉ's other tv and radio shows as a means of promoting their own careers?

There are so many self-promoting wafflers in there - Marie Louise O'Donnell, everybody on Derek Mooney's show, everybody on Marian Finucane's show, many people on Morning Ireland and Drivetime - it's pretty incredible that they are being paid for promoting themselves. It makes no financial sense.

They pay him because technically he's doing work for them. Obviously. Why the **** would they bother with bringing in other people on shows if they could just do it all themselves?

Getting a job in RTE back in the day was like winning the lotto, and with a similar amount of skill required.
