A magnitude 7.3 EQ has struck eastern Turkey, near the city of Van, pop 600,000 in the last hour.

    Source

I'd say major loss of life is inevitable.

Thoughts and hopes are with the Turkish people.

Not necessarily. A 7.2 quake struck north of New Zealand between Fiji a few days ago and nothing came of that. I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

New Zealand buildings are built to withstand earthquakes though. Are the ones in Turkey?

First reports put Van 12 miles from the epicentre.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck eastern Turkey Sunday, collapsing at least two buildings in the center of eastern city of Van, the mayor said.

"Two buildings collapsed in Van, but the telephone system is jammed due to panic and we can't assess the entire damage immediately," Bekir Kaya, the mayor of Van, told NTV television.

"There are so many dead. Several buildings have collapsed, there is too much destruction," said Zulfikar Arapoglu, the mayor for the town of Ercis told NTV television.

"We need urgent aid, we need medics," he added.

The state-run Anatolia news agency said rescue workers were trying to reach people believed to be trapped under the wreckage of a seven-story building in Van, close to the Iranian border.

The earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 struck eastern Turkey at 1:41 p.m. (1041 GMT; 6:41 a.m. EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It said the quake had a depth of 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles), which is shallow and could potentially cause more damage.

Turkey's Kandilli observatory gave it a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 but put its depth at 5 kilometers. Several aftershocks as strong as magnitude 5.5 followed, the observatory said

The quake's epicenter was in the village of Tabanli in eastern Van province, bordering Iran.

The quake was strongly felt in neighboring provinces, NTV television said.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by faultlines.

In 1999, about 18,000 people were killed by two powerful earthquakes that struck northwestern Turkey.

All depends on proximity and depth. The one that devastated Christchurch was much smaller than this. Yet that was much closer to a population centre and was a shallow quake. The quake you mention was centred well out at sea (1800km away from Auckland).

6.6 magnitude quake jolts eastern Turkey, 50 reported injured 23 October 2011, Sunday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM, 0 1 A 6.6 magnitude earthquake rattled the eastern Turkish province of Van on Sunday and media reported some buildings had collapsed and 50 people had been injured. The İstanbul-based Kandilli Seismology Center says the quake occurred at 1:41 p.m. Its epicenter was in the village of Tabanli in the eastern province of Van, bordering Iran, but the quake was also felt in the province's city center as well as the neighboring provinces of Bitlis, Muş, Batman, Diyarbakır and Hakkari. The quake struck at a depth of 5 kilometers. The Anatolia news agency reported that several houses had collapsed in the quake and that aftershocks continue to be felt. The true extent of the damage caused by the quake is not yet known. Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by several fault lines. Television pictures showed damaged buildings and vehicles, crushed under falling masonry, and panicked residents wandering in the streets. Turkish media said phone lines and electricity had been cut off. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will head to Van to see the damage, media reported.

Eastern Turkey hit by 7.3 magnitude quake

Eastern Turkey has been hit by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake, the US Geological Survey reports.
The quake struck at 13:41 (10:41 GMT), some 19km (12 miles) north-east of the city of Van, near to Iran.
Reports are coming in of building collapses in Van and casualties elsewhere, although the extent of the damage is not yet known.
Turkey is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because it sits on major geological fault lines.
Two earthquakes in 1999 with a magnitude of more than 7 killed almost 20,000 people in densely populated parts of the north-west of the country.
    'We need medics'
Turkey's Anatolia news agency reported that rescue workers were searching the wreckage of a seven-storey building in the city of Van for people thought to be trapped in the rubble.
"Two buildings collapsed in Van, but the telephone system is jammed due to panic and we can't assess the entire damage immediately," Bekir Kaya, the mayor of Van, told NTV television.
Zulfikar Arapoglu, mayor of another town, Ercis, told NTV: "There are so many dead. Several buildings have collapsed, there is too much destruction."
"We need urgent aid, we need medics," he is reported by the Associated Press as saying.
A Reuters news agency reporter in the town of Hakkari, around 100 km (60 miles) south of Van, said he felt his building sway for around 10 seconds, but there was no immediate sign of casualties or damage in Hakkari.
While the US Geological Survey (USGS) put Sunday's quake at a magnitude at 7.3, Turkey's Kandilli observatory gave it a preliminary magnitude of 6.6.
The USGS has put the depth of the quake at 7.2 km (4.5 miles), which is relatively shallow.

Yeah I know. I guess my point was not to jump to immediate conclusions. Like at the time I saw that quake in my twitter feed I could have jumped on here saying "a huge tsunami is on its way to destroy New Zealand". Without any proof.
