Sensor overheating warning

I've done a bit of filming for various people, and three or four times the sensor overheating warning has come on in my 500D. I know that its bad that the warning has come on at all, but what I want to know is how bad is it? I took some photos for my sisters wedding recently, and while my ISO settings were fairly high (the lighting was awful) I feel like there's more noise than normal. Could the sensor overheating have something to do with that?

I don't have a 500d but are you using live view constantly? On my dslr, there is only a certain tolerance for live view before you will get into overheating territory. I would take it to mean that this is normal and your camera is doing the correct thing in letting you know that its time to stop doing what you are doing before any damage may occur.

You can only film in live-view mode. The mirror has to be up in order to capture any video.

For DSLR's even using long exposure can heat up the sensor a huge amount which also results in more noise but really it would depend how hot the room is, how hot your hands are and how long you are filming before it would display a warning.

Slightly related but a few dedicated astrophotographers modify their cameras with a custom heatsink to keep the sensor cool for the long exposures needed to take images of night skies because the sensor generates a lot of heat and as a result amplifies the noise.

As AnCatDubh said, the warning is there so that the camera doesn't rise above a safe temperature but of course how quick it reaches that temperature depends on many factors.

Well known issue for those who use the video function a good bit. I don't think it causes any harm to the camera, but it can damage the SD/CF card and you can get funny read errors.

Most guys shooting continuously on video use at least 2 bodies now to get past this, generally the max video time is 12 mins on a canon...

That seems about right - I was shooting a video for some friends band in a very stuffy room and it came on after about 9 minutes.

After re-examining the photos I took the other weekend, I have to concede that the noise level is about right. I'd forgotten about the smoke machine's adverse effects - capturing random shafts of light, some small enough to look like noise. I have some photo's from the gig that I will post in the main forum for C&C.

Many thanks guys, I was in a mild state of panic for a while.
