Hey guys. I was just wondering if it is possible to go onto pure psychology from an arts degree? Will it still be accredited? Where can i do this? Sorry, I don't expect much!! Thanks!

Do you mean during an Arts degree, or after you've finished an Arts degree?

If the former, then yes. And yes.

Assuming you meet the requirements (ie, passing every subject outright in first year) you can progress to denominated psychology in second year. It's very competitive, few people get through to that stage and those who do will have gotten very high marks, but yes it is possible.

If the latter, then there's a 2-year Higher Diploma in Psychology that is accredited the same as a denominated psychology degree.

thanks so much for that! do you happen to know which arts degrees make this possible??

A second higher diploma, the two-year full-time Higher Diploma in Psychology (Full), is intended for graduates who possess an honours degree in any subject area other than psychology, and provides the equivalent course content to that of the denominated BA in Psychology.

NUIM also do Psychology through Arts which I did. The top 30 approx get through to 2nd year where you study single honours psych for the remainder of your degree. Competition is tough for the spaces but it is do-able if you have the dedication.

the BA Psych that you acheive through arts is fully accredited.

thanks very much.. Would you say its hard to get into psychology in second year because I prefer the subjects in maynooth!

I got into second year psychology through arts in Maynooth. I'm in final year now. It takes effort to get in but it's definitely doable. You're already at an advantage if you make sure to go to all of your psychology lectures in first year(or at least nearly all of them ). I didn't study every day or anything like that, but I did try to make sure I did reasonably well in essays and got the gist of what was being covered in lectures. Plus, when it came to exams I put in a couple of weeks solid studying and reading past exam papers, and it pretty much did the trick! You'll also need to pass the other two subjects you choose in first year (without repeating them) in order to be eligible for the top 30 places. It's definitely well worth the effort!

Thanks.. I know you can go straight into psychology but I dont really want to do that!! i just want to make sure I have the option of doing something else if i dont like psychology!!

@saysha...just going to all your classes in first year will not get you in to second year psych. i know plenty of people who virtually never went to lectures but got great grades and got through. Obviously attending tutorials is a must, and submitting the work and getting the grades is all they care about. hundreds of people take psych in first year and the department certainly do not know you personally at that stage so all they care about is the quality of work you are submitting.

also, be smart with your other two first year subjects. there would be nothing worse than not getting through to 2nd year psych and being left with two subjects that you didnt enjoy studying or had no job prospects.
