I'm still using Mac the Ripper.

Not supported in Lion but still works with no issues??

Currently ripping all my DVDs for use on an Iomega Media Player with Handbrake. So, so simple to use - and fast.

Another vote for Mac the Ripper. :)

If you are looking something really simple to use, RipIt is pretty good as well.

Also using RipIt and would give it favorable reviews - tried installing Mac the Ripper three weeks ago on my 10.7.2 system and it wouldn't install.

I used Mac the Ripper over the weekend. It's grand. I then went about plonking a few files into Handbrake to convert them to mp4, though I see there's probably not much need for this seeing as my media player can supposedly handle .vob files. Oops. :o

Careful with the quality though. The MKV handbrake conversions (even compressed to 2GB) are perfect.

Yeah, it's something I was wondering about. I think the .vob files come out at around 3GB, Handbrake reduces them to 600-800 MB. Thought the sound was a little funny on one this evening, though it may just have been my imagination.

Whatever happened to DVDShrink and DVDdecrypter? Are they still usuable or since support stopped for them, are they now useless?

    http://dvdshrink.org/

    http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/

Haven't used them in awhile myself.

I use DVD Shrink to compress videos that I produce myself if they're too big after production on FCE. But doesn't it only shrink to Video TS?

Trying to figure out the best to manage this. A 40-45 minutes TV show comes in at around 2GB with Mac the Ripper - multiply that by 20-24 episodes per season, a few seasons per show and space will start to fill up pretty quickly (using a 500GB drive with a WDTV box at the moment, have another, though it requires a power adapter). So, if then going to over Handbrake you can reduce the (vob) file size a bit. m4v or mkv - any preferences? Video codec h.264, etc? Also, Handbrake isn't exactly speedy, but I presume this can't be avoided given the file sizes and possibly the age of the computer.

I've compressed, for example, Terminator 2 (2h20m) to 2GB MKV via Handbrake. Took around 35 minutes on a 2010 i7 iMac with 4GB RAM. Any help to you? I did try it on the Windows 7 side of the iMac via Parallels VM.. Man was it slow. Two hours or more.

The Handbrake settings for video are 2000MB file size and RF of 20. It's perfect.

Thanks. My machine is from 2008, 4GB RAM, though some of it may be being used unnecessarily, I'm not sure. I'd be lucky to get 35 minutes - are you going from the disc directly with Handrake, this seems fairly slow. What profile are you using: 'regular - normal'? Re T2, are you left with a 2GB file at the end, after Handbrake has done its thing?

I tried to rip two region 1 discs via MtR, but it complained about bad sectors and gave up.

are you going from the disc directly with Handrake,

Yep. HB reads it first (takes about a minute) then I just press start and it encodes it. I'll be doing some more later on and I'll time them for you.
What profile are you using: 'regular - normal'?

I'm not too sure - I'll have to check.

    Yes, a little over 2GB because I add three soundtracks - that's another story!:D

Hmm. Can't comment on that, as all my discs are Region 2. But you could use DVD Shrink to make them region free, and burn the TS folder to your HD, then import that into HB.

    Thanks again.

Well, I went through Handbrake this afternoon. One disc, two episodes of Columbo - one episode was 90 mins long (this took about/under 2 hours for Handbrake to do - ETA was around 1hr 50), the other was 72 mins long, took a bit less, maybe an hour 20 mins or so. Files come out at about 700 MB, think this might be more trouble than it's worth for series.

Suppose I could try the r1 discs in DVD Decrypter, still have it on a Windows machine.

Just timed a conversion of Star Trek VI.

    Time: 1h 48m 35s.

    Finished file size: 2GB.

    Time taken: 25 minutes.

I don't use a profile as such. Just set the file size and rate factor at each session.

There must be something wrong at your end though.

I'm new enough to mac (under a year) and I think handbrake is about as good as it gets for ripping.

Probably, or I've simply been doing it wrong all along, first used Handbrake a few years ago. Some progress - I ripped two episodes of Columbo using MTR, imported the .vob files into Handbrake, went for mp4 format and Video Codec as mpeg-4 (FF-mpeg), target size 700MB (don't have a hugh spec TV). ETA for Handbrake to rip - 13 minutes per episode. Took a little longer, but that's much more like it.
