itunes 10.5 update drama

    I have tried on numerous occasions to update itunes on my macbook. Have tried software update and check for updated and its saying there is no software updates for your computer at this time. Software for Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2

    When I connect my ipad 2 it states that a new ipad sofware (version 5.0) is available but requires itunes 10.5. It then asks if I would like to download this. I click download and it checks for new software and finds none.
    This is driving me mad as I cant figure it out. Any help greatly appreciated as I can't update to itunes 10.5 and there fore also ios 5.
