I am having a sound problem on my desktop

Sound was working fine, then stopped

the windows jingle plays fine when booting up, through the speakers, so I know they are working

but then if i try to play music or anything web based there's nothing..

I have checked all the obvious stuff, sound levels etc.. the device (IDT High Definition Audio Codec) seems to be working, I even uninstalled and re-installed it. I can't play a test sound through Windows, Skype etc...

I can't figure it out. I'm running Vista Home Premium

    Any ideas??

What, if anything (including windows updates) had you installed before the problem happened?

Do you have the most recent drivers?

Click the volume icon in the system tray once, now open "Mixer" while a sound is playing and make sure none are muted/down low. Windows Vista/7 has a cool feature where you can mute particular apps, youtube would usually be under plugin container if you use firefox, but it can confuse people

    thanks folks.

    i fixed it.

the problem seemed to be that windows updates somehow messed up the driver. So i read somewhere that the fix was:

    uninstall the IDT driver
download an appropriate driver (from IDT)
reboot without internet connection (thus stopping vista downloading and installing a driver automatically)
install the driver in (2) above
    reboot

sounds a bit convoluted, and doesn't necessarily make sense, but.....

    it worked...
