Urea Breath Test

I recently had to have one and had to wait 6 weeks to get an appointment in SJH. I was then surprised to arrive to a nearly empty clinic (and nobody waiting after me at 2.30) for a procedure that appeared very simple to perform.

So I wondered if there was any reason why this service cannot simply be conducted in a GP's surgery, rather than requiring people to wait 6 weeks with an unpleasant medical condition? My GP has suggested I'd be called within 10 days, but when I queried this with the office they laughed at the idea...

Apparently t's a very expensive test, and the equipment used to analyse the bag at the end is very pricey. Like, over €100 for a test or something? So I assume your average GP isn't going to buy all that equipment.

Why's the waiting list so long? Big demand for this procedure obviously!

But couldn't they do the breath into the bag bit in the GP's and then send the kit to the lab for testing? In the same way as they would for bloods.

It didn't cost anything although it can be done for €100 in Charlemont Clinic (which means it costs a lot less than €100 I'd suspect!) but I didn't find that out until 2 weeks after I'd booked my appointment and they weren't running a clinic for another 2 weeks at that time.
