Hi, so speedometer in my 02 lx fiesta keeps showing 0 since yesterday.

I just would like to know what is usually the reason for that and what has to be replaced and about how much this will cost again.. :(

(oh, first the engine warning light went on and maybe it has something to do with it?)

Could be the cable snapped if they use a cable, some are electronic which means the sensor failed.

Ok, they don;t look too expensive, but do you think I would be able to fit one myself? :D

(or I am just not lucky with car I bought or old cars are always disaster? Its just one thing after another every 3 months!) :/

Making an (educated ) guess, I'd say ford used the same or similar to that of the Focus for the same time. I doubt a cable is used, but I'm open to correction.

I know in the Focus Mk1, the Speedo showing 0 is a common problem. The cause, in both my parents cars, was the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). It is located underneath the car and measures the speed of the driveshaft. It is easily replaced if you have axel stands or ramps, and can be bought online for under €50.

Common enough problem on Fords of that era.

While your at your car, maybe check the oil level? Engine lights turning on aren't usually a good thing.

A broken/disconnected VSS can flag a CEL. Certainly on a Suzuki Wagon I had recently with a broken box, with the VSS disconnected after about 10 mins of driving the CEL came on and the power steering went ape.

Handy enough to replace one, should have no bother replacing it yourself if you have axle stands and a spanner set.

Same thing happened to me with my last Escort

I'd a guy working on the car who'd tried to replace the bulb for the airbag as it hadn't been lighting up on start up
but he ended up damaging the cable going from the speedometer clock to the drive on the gearbox

Replaced it twice and it stopped working again within 20 miles

I can remember paying around €25 per cable so they're not cheap

Could be indication that someone tried to swap the clock unit at some stage, maybe for the white sports edition dials or to hide the real milage of the car

Or to replace or take out a bulb in time for the NCT
