BOOKMAKER BOYLESPORTS HAS decided to pay out early on Labour’s Michael D Higgins becoming the next president of Ireland despite there still being just under a week until election day.
Higgins has led a number of polls throughout the course of the campaign but the most recent Sunday Business Post/Red C poll showed independent candidate Seán Gallagher leading the way with a 12 per cent advantage on Higgins.
Despite this, the Irish firm says it is convinced that Higgins “has it in the bag despite it being an extremely close race”.
The pay-out will cost the bookmaker some €125,000 with a further €100,000 to be paid out if it turns out it has made the wrong call.
Leon Blanche from Boylesports said in a statement today:
This is possibly the most volatile market we’ve seen in years with so many twists and turns. The majority of punters have stuck to their guns and backed Michael D. Higgins

“We’ve paid out early before and are yet to get it wrong so let’s hope this prediction works in our favour once more!”, he added.
    Boylesports latest presidential odds are:
    • 1/3 Michael D. Higgins
    • 2/1 Sean Gallagher
    • 25/1 Martin McGuinness
    • 40/1 Gay Mitchell
    • 66/1 David Norris
    • 100/1 Mary Davis
    • 250/1 Dana Rosemary Scallon

I always wondered why Bookies were allowed do this, I think it could clearly influence the outcome of the election.

For one it may make some Higgins voters complacent and as a result they may not turn out to vote because they think he has it in the bag.

I think same as, it is a bit ridiculous that they are allowed to do this. I'm sure FG are on the case since it might harm Mitchell's comeback to the top of the polls :pac:

It's their money, they can give it away if they want. Lot's of bookies do this sort of thing, it's cheap advertising as far as they're concerned.

divide the claimed payout by about 10 for the real figure.

Ya mean he has had an Ann Summers bounce

WITH just days of canvassing left, the Fine Gael presidential campaign has finally got down and dirty.
However, the Taoiseach and Gay Mitchell were not trading low blows against political opponents yesterday.
Instead they brought their canvass into the unchartered territory of a Limerick sex shop.

Going by the latest poll, looks like Boyle will have serious egg on its face next Friday.

    Red C Poll for SBP

Gallagher up 1%, Higgins down 2%.

I would have placed a bet with Boylesports, but the presidential betting was hard to find on their site. Sorry I didn't now.

What the bookies do will make no difference, they're going to lose an absolute fortune when Gallagher wins and are trying to affect the outcome. The truth is, FF have won it, oops!, sorry Gallagher has it in the bag and the FF bandwagon is rolling again.

A Gallagher win would not be a FF win by a long shot.

In fact, it wiuld be the oppostite an raise in peoples minds that to be electable that they would need to go independent.

They might feel that FF is a toxic frenchise.

Everyone talking about Boylesports, as said it's advertising and so while it seems a stupid move it may end up being a good one
