References on my CV, one is good & recent - the other is ancient & probably useless.

Hi, my first reference on my CV is fairly recent and the guy would have no problem with giving a reference at all. But the one after that is from about four years ago when I was working in Penneys. He was the manager, always busy in his office and he won't remember me at all as I was one of the many temporary blow-ins just working there part time while at college.

What can I do in a situation like this? Just ring them up and ask them for a reference anyway? Or just leave it on the CV and hope they don't call them at all. To be honest if I was an employer I wouldn't see any value in a 4 year old reference from part time work in Penneys...

    Any advice?

First off, just put "references available upon request" on the CV itself.

Does your current reference cover the last 4 years since the less useful one? If so, then that might be enough.

Thanks... but I have to apply for the job online and the form asks for two references. There was about a year and a half of travel in the last four years, and 5 months (& counting) of unemployment.

Use the reference from Pennys, it will more than likely a very standard reference with few details on it, that what large companies like Penny's tend to do for part-time or short term workers

If you're applying for a non-retail job, chances are the employer wouldn't bother contacting Penny's. Well, I wouldn't, but if the job was relatively recent/current, I might consider it if it was relevant.

Do both references have to be from jobs? I've received CVs from young people with typical student retail jobs, who used their college lecturers as referees.
