Micheal D Higgins to "Kick the bucket" before 7 year term lapses

While he seems like an honest guy, theres not much life left in the old dog.

Can anyone see him making it through a 7 year term if elected?

The poor divil looks wrecked from all the campaigning. I'd say he'll be in the bed for a month after this.

Couldn't anything happen anyone within 7 years?

The night is young yet, OP. You still have a few other candidates to get the dig in.

Rockin Ronnie Reagan was also 70 when he became President of America and he had a tougher job to do , what with all the union busting, privatisation and the creation of an entire country of wage-slaves.

All Mickey D has to do is cut a few ribbons and turn up to parties on time.

Sure the president has feck all to do anyway so he might as well catch up on some rest.

Don't see why he couldn't live to 77. Sure the 70s are the new 50s.

Its hard to believe that Mickey D is only 70, he looks about 20 years older.

Yes, but where would we find a family that inbred? Laois? Meath? ....

It's all the drugs and prostitutes he indulges in.

I'll never forget the last thing my grandfather said just before he kicked the bucket. He said "Grandson, how far do you think I can kick this bucket?"

Although I'm giving my no. 1 to Martin McGuinness, I have great respect for Michael D as well and will be easily able to live with it if - as is highly likely - he is elected President.:)

Remember, Johnny Todd, any one of us, you, me or Michael D, could kick the bucket at any moment. He could live to a hundred (and collect the €2,540 cheque from his successor), whilst you or - especially - I might not even live to vote next Thursday.

    Don't tempt fate. She's a real bitch.

Perhaps we should vote him in on the basis there will be better candidates when he croaks it?

Actually how do they decide on the replacement? Do they just pass the tiara and sceptre onto the runner-up, as in other competitions of this nature?

Wise words Ellis. But do you think he can make it through the 7 years?

Aye the boul Mickey must have been fairly hard at it in his day, Keith Richards is a similar age and looks better than him.

Remember that Dev was 75 when he was first elected as president, and was re-elected at 84.

Thanks, Johnny. I don't see why not, actually. He is quite a live wire.:) I spent a couple of days working with a neighbour last August and I was knackered, but he wasn't. I'm in my late 60s and he's in his early 80s!!! Anyway, even if Michael D were to shuffle off this mortal coil before the 7 years were up, he might easily have left his mark by then. Remember, the US President only has 4 years before he has to seek re-election. And, it must be said, even the aul Windsor wan across the water is one hell of an active dame, and she's 85.

I suppose I'm not really questioning his age. It's just him, he dosent look like a man in good health.

I've watched him during interviews and don't know if hes going to fall asleep or drop down dead.

How far did he kick it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

He's spent the last month up and down the country attending multiple functions and presentations every day. Himself and his team sending out tweets and photos like a mad thing
And spent decades as a TD which can involve heading out to meetings on dark winters nights when all you want to do is sit by the fire

He has more energy then me anyway and he's nearly three times older

I don't know how else he can convince you OP

He has my vote anyway, don't care how old he is.

Far enough to have killed him :(

He's just grand, leave him alone, his wife looks a very fit woman - well able to give him a dig of the elbow if he looks like drifting off.

OK, he's a bit 'quirky' for some tastes, but he has fluent Irish and is well educated - and, err... probably even knows how to hold the old knife and fork correctly - so won't let the side down at official functions!!!

McGuinness/Sinn Feinn/IRA? Maybe in another seven years, but too soon, too fast just now...

It's probably best we don't remember Devs presidential service at all.

My memory of Dev's presidency was an old half blind man being led out to throw in the sliotar in Croke Park and then being rushed off the field by his aide who was holding his arm

Kind of sad to see realy

He's only 3 years older than Norris!

Would Norris last the term if he was elected, however unlikely it may be now!
