What is the minimum partition size for W7 Ultimate considering the following:-

    1) All user data and log files will be on a separate partition.
    2) The pagefile will be on a different partition.
    3) All installed software will be on a separate partition except for any dll's installed into the system directory
    4) Hibernation will not be activated.
    5) All temporary internet files will be deleted on exiting the browser.

I'd give it a few gigs, maybe 10 or so? Make sure to turn off indexing and all those features also, You could probably get away with 5gigs, but I find Windows can get slow when your low on space

Thanks did intend to turn off everything I can. I'll be using it as a development machine so I wanted to be able to regularly ghost the OS to a USB stick To be able to revert the OS without having to reinstall a rake of applications.

don't forget you are going to need a lot of room for service pack install
eg: 4.5 GB is the size of my software distribution folder

my windows 7 folder is 24.5 GB

    over 400MB in common files
and there is also the stuff in system volume information

How big is the hard drive ?

setup a VM with a dynamically expanding file - you only use the space you use

virtualbox will do this and you can clone the images and take snapshots so rolling back is a breeze

I already have virtual box on another machine with W7 as on of the VM's.

On the new one I would just like to dual boot W7 and Fedora, but try to keep the two OS partitions just for the OS's, all installed software on another partition, User data on a third may be splitting the data into two one for pictures, music and video, the other for everything else.

they don't need to be real partitions, just setup two folders on the data drive

mklink is the windows equivalent of ln

if you weren't using windows 7 you could use www.fs-driver.org to use the ext partition for them, you won't be able to access the other OS's drive that reliablily if you have dual booted while the other is suspended / hibernated

(in windows 7 you can extract files from the exe and install manually but YMMV )
