Toilet Horn

    Hi All,

When I flush the toilet in the upstairs bathroom it makes a sound similiar to a fog horn. This usually lasts for about 6 seconds but on occasion can go on for up to 1 minute - ish

We have 2 other toilets in the house and they don't do this at all.
The thing is is that this is our main toilet and after say 11pm we don't flush it in case the horn goes off and wakes up the neighbour as it can be quite loud.

The downside is that there is a smell of pi$$ the following morning in the jacks.

Question is does anybody know how I can fix this without getting a plumber out as I can't afford it.

I would have thought it's something as simple as trapped air in the cistern but know nothing about them.

Any help ( with diagrams plz ) would be greatly appreciated. I don't know the name of the parts in the toilet so if you get technical I'll try my best to understand - Thanks ALL !!

what's not clear from the post is whether the 'horn' sound occurs during the flush or the subsequent filling of the cistern.

Is the cistern filled from the mains or from the cold water tank?

    As carlow says above.....

It sounds like you need a new inlet valve anyway. Weather its low or high pressure will depend on weather its mains or tank.

The reason i suggest an inlet valve is its a lot easy to replace the valve as a diyer than try to repair it.

    Hi Carlow / Joey,

    Thanks for the replies !!
I am not sure to be honest if it's fed from the mains or the tank. The house was built in 1995 if that helps. I would have assumed it was fed from the tank in the attic as after it's flushed i can hear the tank upstairs "refilling" so I would assume that it is refilling because it gave some water to the toilet.

The answer to the other question is that it makes this "horn" noise during the flush, not during the refilling.

The refilling of the toilet is quick / normal. The toilet downstairs can take up to 10 minutes + to refill which is another problem. Any ideas on how I can speed up the refill on the toilet downstairs.

I have googled inlet valve toilet but can't find much info on it. Any chance you could post a pic of the inlet valve for me ? This would then allow me to investigate the "inlet valve" in my cistern that makes the "fog" noise. Another friend of mine in work suggested though that it could be trapped air which makes more sense to me but again I have no experience of these things.

Thanks both, appreciate your help / time !!
