Hi all, hoping you can help me. think of me as a dumbass who knows not much about tech stuff! I want to get an ipad 2 for other half for christmas. First off all we have at home as a pretty old standard computer which works fine and we have internet! we use an 02 dongle for this. Thats it, no iphones no laptops no anything hence my lack. So firstly can I get an ipad 2 with wifi only and somehow connect or upgrade dongle or do I need to get ipad with 3G? Secondly will 16gb be enough? really all he'll use it for is surfing net, games like yatzee and poker, you tube for songs, nothing huge. Thirdly should I wait till ipad 3. will that be out straight after christmas? I can get ipad 2 16gb wifi for 380 I think. thanks all!

You can get a mifi device which is a dongle that works wirelessly

Secondly will 16gb be enough? really all he'll use it for is surfing net, games like yatzee and poker, you tube for songs, nothing huge.

Should be ok, but it depends on usage.

Thirdly should I wait till ipad 3. will that be out straight after christmas? I can get ipad 2 16gb wifi for 380 I think.

Up to you, iPad 3 will be announced in March the very earliest and will not be available until a couple of weeks after. Cheapest iPad 2 is 479 EUR.

thanks a million for this. I saw the ipad 16gb on viking for 379 plus vat. Im hoping my work will buy it and then I wont have to pay vat on it, but not sure yet! someone said to me to get a router to connect to our dongle, is this the same as the mifi you're talking about? once you buy the ipad lets say 16gb, can you upgrade to 32gb if you need to? and can you upgrade to 3g also or are you stuck with what you buy? I did say I was a dumb ass!

No, in both cases you're stuck with what you buy unless you then buy another iPad 2. It's hardware, so so that's it.

However, I'd prefer to avoid expressions like "stuck with". It's a marvellous machine and there are all kinds of storage solutions, these days.

My take is this: I recommend a 16Gb Wifi+3G version which gives you the option of being always connected, at home and abroad (by using a SIM local to the visited country). I hated having a wifi only device. I see no need for a bigger device, these days there are so many streaming and storage in the cloud solutions it seems totally unnecessary to spend more money needlessly.

The router to dongle solution is different to MiFi. MiFi is another dongle which is wireless in typical usage.

Can "regular" customers buy from Viking or is it only business' that they sell to?

I personally wouldn't buy the 3g version, you are already paying for one internet connection, so as a previous poster said get a mifi, and put your existing sim into it.
You can connect to your mifi when at home or wifi when traveling, plus you can take the mifi with you if you need it.
