Sky TV & Multi-room?

    Hi all,
I recently went with Sky TV and got a second connection in a bedroom. As I don't have a telephone landline in the house, I had to get that 'Sky-Eye' yolk in the bedroom, to pick up the Sky channels. I previously had the NTL connection in that room, so the box is still in the wall for that (when they disconnected me, they didn't cut the cable going into that connection).

The Sky-Eye means that we both have to watch the same channels at the same time.

Is there any way I can have the bedroom TV watching different channels to the living-room one, without having to get a telephone line in my home (there's only so much spongebob I can take:rolleyes:).

I've been on to sky at least a dozen times and they will NOT allow this without telephone line. I'm thinking of moving to UPC for this reason. There's no way i'm putting in a phone line just to watch two different channels. I feel you pain re spongebob.

Thanks for that - that's what they told me too - and I'm the same as you, no intention of getting a landline...
    thanks anyway

    In what way?

I called them 10 days ago ready to sign up for the service and they still have not been able to 'set up' my address(whatever that means). Thats why i'm looking for info on them before I make the move.

I will emphasise that it's only my own personal experience. They were very quick and efficient to sign me up to both tv, and broadband. The service itself was fine - but I had a few issues with their bills and their customer service reps were appalling, to say the least. I then tried to disconnect my broadband and it took weeks to get an address from them to send a letter to disconnect etc...although I was almost two years with them for tv, they tried to charge me a disconnection fee of 100euro also...to cut a long story short, I found them really bad to deal with.

I can't say too much about sky just yet - again, installation etc was a doddle, but I was surprised when my first bill was for two months rental (one month and one month in advance!!), but am hoping it's plain sailing from here.

You always pay your rental to $ky in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,775 ✭✭✭Fittle

Well they conveniently forgot to mention that to me when I signed up.

Sounds like any choice woild be better than SpongeBob. Why not buy a free to air satellite decoder and connect it to the dish? You will get UK FTA channels (BBC1-4, ITV1-4, C4, E4, Film4, More4, Ch5 and lots more).

my friend has the same problem. has one sky box in the house, wants to have a second downstairs (and has to be seperate, the eye yokey isn't gonna work) but no phoneline. everyone in the house has mobiles, and a phoneline is dangerous (people ringing up bills!) so of course sky are like no way.

and upc isn't in his area yet!

Sky had the decency to go into our apartment block and wire up Sky only to tell me a Magnet landline is not compatible for call backs for multiple room boxes.

How irresponsible of Sky to go to that trouble to wire a building and then fail to check the landline.

I haven't got a landline but was prepared to get a BB/Landline package with Magnet and tv with sky.

Now it looks like I'm stuck with Magnet.

Can we lobby sky to waive this ridiculous landline rule and employ people to do visible call outs once a month?

I have sky+ and 3 multiroom boxes and not one of them connected to phone line. Never even had a phone line connected when i had them put in. I just told the engineer there was a problem with the line and he rigged it up and said phone sky when sorted. There are a few ways around this.

Although a friend has hers connected to phone lines and sky keep telling her its not and threatening to charge her for seperate boxes.

that happened to my mother before, the whole phonelines connected sky saying they weren't.

as for me. my mother used to have a multiroom subscription with sky which she cancelled. couple months later i decided i wanted sky. i rang them up and said i had two boxes already - which was true, i'd paid for them so i kept them after mam cancelled her subscription - so didn't need boxes and i wanted to set up multiroom. yer wan on the phone said she'd send me out cards for them, never mentioned nothing bout needing them connected to a phoneline - wouldn't work neway, we don't got one anymore - so if they ever send me a snotty letter they'l be getting one back saying check your phone recordings. no-one mentioned it to me so.....

    Hi,
Just finsished new build and prob going with Sky. Never had them before so trying to get my head around everything! Was going to do multi-room but on hearing this phone line issue (we don't want to get a phone line), I think will just leave it as single room for now. With no phone line though, they are charging an extra €37.50 installation fee - does having no phone line make a difference to the reception etc / what's does this fee cover? All seems nuts!

No real option for UPC (no upc lines there - used to be but old house knocked so god knows where they are!)

Just thinking of getting the basic sky package, but all seems daunting with extra costs and things not being straightforward...
    Ay ideas / help welcome!!

    Simon

Order Sky through an independent seller or one of the Sky stands in your nearest Tesco-they can waive that €37.50 no landline fee.;)

The fee for having no landline is to cover extra cost in getting your card activated as the Sky box can do it through the landline otherwise the installer has to call Sky and have it done manually.

Hi everyone, I could't find a thread that matched exactly so i hope this is ok.
We've had sky+ & 1 multi room a few years. Had it installed by local independent contractor but have had load of problems - wires/ cables coming undone etc. had to have them back several times €50 each time. Now sky+ box is not working. Not having same contractor again. Phoned sky who said we could upgrade & get free new box but paying extra each month so No. Or they could send out a service guy €100 once off.
It looks like We could do better by cancelling existing contract & starting a new one.
Has anyone done this? Is it complicated? Any advice on how to do this -we would be at the same address

I had some work on a fiends Sky dish last weekend, it was done by the same guy that did couple of jobs for me on my sat install over the last few years, if you like PM me and will send you his details.

Alternative you could check Adverts.ie for Satellite installers.

Not sure what box you have but should be similar, if you go to Settings, Signal, you should see the Stenght and quality, if both are over 60%-70% it should be ok for Sky+ to work, if under could be a signal issue. Also when you contact Sky confirm with them that Sky+ is active in you account and that the Viewing card is linked to the Sky+ box you are using. Any error's when trying to record/pause?

AM i right in saying Sky Multiroom is 15 euro per point per month after the first point? UPC are charging me 8.64 per extra point per month?
1 main sky point then 2 extra Sky points in bedroom 1 and bedroom 2 30.00 euro just for 2 extra points upstairs? Surely Not

If you are a new customer multiroom points cost €10 per extra box for 12 months

if you are an exsisting customer multiroom costs €15 per extra box..

Sky charges more, as there is more channels and better picture quality in my opinion as well as access to hundreds of free channels that dont need a subscription that are not available on the upc platform.

Per month? 15 euro per month Equates to 180 a year for an extra point

Per Bill? (which is every 2 months) 15 Euro this way equates to 90 Euro per year

I just had a Sky Sales rep in and he was putting me off the idea of the third box as he said most people just fit a SKY magic eye.
He also said the magic Eye was an official SKY product but he couldnt supply lol WEIRD!
Fecking bamboozled me with figures, :o

I was quoted that €100, too. I asked to be put through to cancellations and was then given a free service call and a new box. I needed a new dish and cabling.
Having said that, I would recommend getting an established independent installer. A good one will be far more expert than your typical Sky installer. (I ended up re-doing all the cabling, other than the LNB. I wouldn't climb a high roof now, even with a harness.)
