I don't see 'MHL' mentioned in the link.

Is there any real difference with the this Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter? (excl. the male HDMI connection end). Similar price too.

Does the cable have to be 'MHL' compatible to work?

Sorry if it's a silly question.

AFAIK With true MHL the TV also supplies power to the phone, but few TVs are MHL equipped so with these adapters/cables a micro usb port is added to allow you to use your charger.
I'm not sure if there is any difference between the two above, but if you don't have an MHL TV you do need the micro USB port.

Both I'm sure will output your phone screen and sound via HDMI cable.

It will drain your phone battery and needs to be powered separately .
I ave the samsung one but never use it du to the amount of junk that you would need to have with you

Just to add to the conversation. I have the official samsung mhl adapter and it requires the phone charger to be plugged into adapter for it to work but the battery drains when watching a video albeit quite slowly. It's worth investing in a second battery if you regularly intend to watch videos through a tv.
