I have a late 2008 24" iMac, Upgraded to 2GB and have updated the software regularly but i have not update the OS.
    I'm on OS X 10.5.8
    Should i be updating ?
I have just done a complete re-install so it's like a new machine again and i have ordered a 4GB upgrade from the Crucial website today.
All my movies and anything important is on a portable drive.
If i'm going to upgrade now is probably the right time as it took me ages to sort out all my files, It's like moving house...:D
I wondering what are the main benefits of updating the OS.
Mainly use my mac for internet and watching movies.
    Thanks.

Updating to Snow Leopard should increase the speed a little without bringing any disadvantages. However, you should make sure that all your existing 3rd party software is compatible and, in particular, external hardware such as scanner, printer, camcorder, will still work. I.e. make sure the drivers are S.L. compatible.

What about going straight to Lion

That would be OK IF it's a core 2 duo processor and IF it's not using any "Rosetta" applications and IF he's not relying on printer, scanner etc. Needs to check compatibility carefully.

Mind you, is Lion even an option? I thought it was an "upgrade" from Snow Leopard.

My iMac is a core 2 duo processor and i'm about to buy a new printer anyway so that should not be an issue,
Iv'e had my mac for 3 years now and it's still on Leopard but i've never once had any sort of problems with it.
Reading some reviews / posts on Snow Leopard and Lion i'm just unsure of what to do as most people who update seem to have some problems to work out
but having said that it might be worth sorting a few niggles to have the better / newer os. I'd say most people have updated so it must be worth it. ?

Updating always creates problems. Only you can decide whether the benefits outweigh the possible hassle. I'm still using "Tiger" with my main Mac and "Snow Leopard" on my portables. Do your research carefully.
