hi folks, my father has a two story, old house the roof is in good repair, but every time theres a big wind some of the slates come off. we were looking into a seal for the roof that ties all the slates in together.we were quoted 3000 for the job. just wondering is it any good, is it a once off job or does it have to be topped up every few years.

My first thought is that while the roof looks in good condition the fixing nails have probably perished. I'm not a fan of the roof sealing stuff as you intimated, its a sort of remedial job, (and can look crap, but tbh thats only from quiet close, so maybe not a concern on a 2 storey house). all that said its cheaper than a re-roof, especially with old slates, as a fair % will prob get broken... best of luck with it

can u provide more detail on the seal idea: inside/outside/ material/method of application/product/etc.

Is it a Dale Farm product?

In passing a roof that looses slates in wind cannot be described as being in good repair:)

the quote we got is from rapid seal, and as far as i know its done on the outside of the roof, its painted on then a layer of cling film type then a final coat of bitumus paint. the slates are old but all there apart from the few that blow down, the house is so high its hard to repair them. to reslate the roof would cost around 7000.all we want is to keep the slates we have there. maybe there are other products or applications out there. thanks for the replies so far. all welcome

Whatever product you go for ensure that its fit for purpose. check its certification to make sure it does what it claims. also check for specific installation recommendations.

the see what guarantees of longevity you get on it.

Seriously, this certainly cant be a tried and tested method of roof preservation for the long term in this day and age? In my experience (20 years) brush on or paint on systems are used as a temporary repair on flat roofing systems.(Hessian and bitumen destroyed many iconic rooftops around Dublin city in the early to late 80's due to the economic downfall, but people had very little choice then?? Coating roof slates with any weathering product is counter productive. Re-roofing is inevitable and by paying out a large amount of money to seal slating!!!! not only hinder the future contractor and adding more time on site for labour and debris, costing you the customer even more?? It's a no brainier to be honest!
If it was your car that had a major problem and you had any safety concerns about it. It would be replaced!!
If you have a slate roof that is in this dangerous condition you have it replaced.
    Hope I'm not to late?
    Danny
