Hi all. Hoping someone can shed a bit of light on this...So, the house I rent uses gas heating. The heating timer gives 3 options: heat the water, heat the upstairs rads, heat the downstairs rads.

Lately, we have noticed that if we just turn on the water to be heated, it also heats the downstairs rads (even though the downstairs rads button is not switched on). But aswell, just say, we have turned on the hot water heating for a hour, it will turn off after the hour, but the downstairs rads will still be on and will not turn off unless the switch at the wall is knocked off. So, we have often come home in the evening to find the downstairs part of the house absolutely boiling and the rads heating away just because one of us had heated the water for an hour that morning.

I got onto the landlord about it over a week ago and he has a plumber coming over this evening....... but typical... everthing is working perfectly now this week and im sure the plumber is gonna be like "WTF are you on about!!" By the way, a similar problem with the downstairs rads happened last xmas... we had set the heating to turn on for a few hours a day while we were away over xmas period to keep the place tickin over, only to return a few days later to find the timer had gone bonkers and kept the heating on constant.... place was like a furnace! So plumber came and got new timer for us that time. But now we seem to be back to square one (at times!)

Anyone know what the problem might be?

motorized valve controlling downstairs sounds like it's jamming in the 'on' position adn will require replacing

Yes it seems to be a motorised valve, In your Hotpress you will see two motorised valves attached to pipes, basically like a small beige coloured box with a cable coming out of them, One of them is not closing properly, You can take the two screws out with a flathead and close it manually by hand, ( In line with the pipe is open) ( Horizontal to the pipe is closed)
