    Hi

I started a job back in august as a beautician. I already had completed a one year beauty therapist course which i paid alot for and when i passed my exams i applied for a job in a salon. The salon told me that i was going to be on a 3 month unpaid contract. The salon has only recently opened and only hired unpaid trainees. I was told by the owner that i was not going to find any paid work anywhere as i had no Salon experience and i believed her but now im not so sure. We are not being trained by the salon in any way and are just left to look after clients by ourselves. I dont even think were insured by the salon to work on clients and when I asked for a reference from the owner to give to my landlord to prove i was working, she put down a different name and address for herself. She wouldnt even put down the name of the Salon in the reference. I was just wondering if anyone would know whats going on and is it legal for her to keep us unpaid for three months. She also has said to another worker that she could keep her unpaid for up to 6 months and asked two of the trainnees to sign up onto social welfare whilst working there if they are struggling for money, but told them not to mention they were working there....any advice? sorry, know this is a bit of a long post but theres alot goin on here!!

You are being taken for a mug. Go to Citizens Advice to get the addresses for the Rights Commissioner, the Revenue Commissioners, the Fraud Squad etc.

This person sounds like a total con-artist taking advantage of you (and others).

I would talk to the Citizens Advice people for guidance here. You are being taken for a mug!!

You are entitled to work for free for as long as you are willing to do so, and an employer is entitled to stand by and let you do so. If you agreed on doing work free of charge, then that's your perogative.

Do you have any form of a written contract yet, or has your employer advised you that you would be given a salary after three months?

Your employer sounds a little clueless, she could simply take on interns who could retain their social welfare payments as well as an additional bonus very easily if she applied for the scheme. By advising them to simply go on the Dole she is opening herself and them up to criminal charges.
