Ubuntu & Network Cameras

    Hi all,
Kind of new to Linux with bit of experience with Terminal in OSX but not much. Having a spot of bother with Ubuntu Studio (latest version.)

I'm trying to get some network cameras happening, (AXIS 210a) first thing I did was to use the AXIS software on windows to identify each cameras IP address and MAC address. Then when I plug one into the Linux machine I get nothing, nada. Can't ping either the IP or the MAC address.

Next thing I did was install .wine and try to run the AXIS software on that to see could it find the cameras that way, but I needed to install Mono for Windows because the software uses .NET. Well that was about 2 hours of command line messing with very little in the way of a result.

So I've binned that idea and am looking at Ubuntu again, it's a fresh install and I'm wondering is there something I need to do to get it to find the camera. It's on a network and it seems to see the other computers on the network and goes online no problem.

So can anyone offer a reason perhaps why it won't find the camera even with a ping? Is there anything I need to do with the fresh install?

I intend to use WebCamStudio or zoneminder once it's all up and running.

can anyone offer a reason perhaps why
according to the manual for the AXIS 210A the camera can configure IP address filtering... that might be a reason.
    IP Address Filtering
Enable IP Address Filtering- To allow or deny access to the AXIS 210/210A/211/211A
Network Camera check the box Enable IP address filtering. Once enabled, the IP addresses
in the list will be allowed or denied access according to the choice made in the drop-down
list Allow/Deny the following IP addresses.
The administrator can add up to 256 IP address entries to the list (a single entry can
contain multiple IP addresses). The users from these IP addresses need to be specified in the
user list with the appropriate access rights. This is done from Setup > System Options >
    Security > Users.

Doubt it, I made the Camera accessible to all. No name or password needed.
Apart from that, I initialized the camera and used the default camera address. Furthermore I don't know the IP address of the computer I'm connecting to so wouldn't have entered that IP address.

    Thanks for the suggestions though.

Kind of off topic but if I buy an ordinary IP camera can I view it in VLC?

is there Linux software for pan & tilt and is this all fairly standard?

sorry no experience with these yokes at all.

    Sorted!!!
Dunno why I couldn't get it to work. Re-assigned the IP address to the camera and off she went!!

I'm viewing it in firefox right now!! http://***.***.***.***/view/index.shtml could have been missing parts of the web address, couldn't say for sure, it got late!!

Currently trying in a couple of players, nothing happening yet. Some more reading and tweeking needed, don't see why it wouldn't work!!

    Any suggestions?

Here's an interesting Pan and Tilt rig> http://www.robots.ox.ac.uk/~bob/personal/projects/wiipantilt/index.html
