Give it a chance, it might work and the area was promised a regeneration scheme this is part of it.

You first two posters are all very cynical

It's reinvestment for the area and will help the community.
Only AH could turn a good news story into a crime story

This is the only way any kind of regeneration will work, from the ground up with the kids. there is no point in building new houses for people and just throwing them back in there. The social housing issue in Limerick is massive, and things like this are badly needed. St. Marys park was basically a large group of houses where people were thrown in together and basically left to their own devices. There is no quick fix to the issue, there are many fine people from St. Marys Park and the like who's good names and communities have been tarnished by the few scum that live there.

I find it unfair to say that it will be burnt down in 2 weeks, what about the great Library that was built beside Moyross, that was never set on fire and anytime I've been in there I've seen loads of kids in doing their homework or reading. And I am sure this Creche will be the same a great source of pride for the communities. Just because you come from a council estate that doesn't mean that you don't deserve to have all the amenities that everyone else has.

I for one am getting really fed up of the Limerick bashing.

The majority of people in St Marys area are decent people.

Even without ever been in the area I know that is true, its just that tiny element that destroy an area, its the same in any of the rough Dublin estates.

Many of those kids will have it rough at home.

Who'd deny them an environment in which to enjoy themselves for a couple of hours a day?

Given the sh1t we're now paying for, that's money well spent.

I agree. Why should people from disadvantaged areas have nice things?

Why should anyone get anything I think is the opinion starting to emerge. Creche in a disadvantaged area ? It'll be burnt down! Money for unemployed people to live on ? Why they'll spend it all on drugs and playstation games !! More than 4 nappies a day for incontinent disabled kids ? Cant they wash out the old ones or somethin ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭PrincessLola

Actually I think its a great idea, very positive for the area. But only 45 children? I dunno how many kids creches usually have but that doesn't seem like a large intake.. What if there are more children in need in the area?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭4leto

A crèche also gives some of the single parents a chance to better themselves, it gives them time to perhaps do a course or get a job.

Also the children get a good start on their socialising skills and an earlier start in their education,

This is a very good idea for a regeneration scheme with an aim of breaking the cycle of poverty. I don't think this is a waste of money.

Of course it is..... get the army in; flush them out; make an example...and proceed from there - wherever this shyte is going on in Ireland. Oh - I forgot; we'd be breaching people's 'human' rights. And they'd only be queueing up on here to moan about it.

Better to invest in children coming from disadvantaged areas like this because teenagers and adults are a lost cause unfortunately.

Give over. The reason we have such places in Ireland is because real money was never spent in those places.

There weren't too many jumping up and down when the regeneration was going on in Dublin calling it a waste of money. And I don't think the people of Limerick would see it that way I certainly don't, this has been promised for years and it is finally arriving, long may it continue.

And neither the OP nor anyone agreeing with him/her have given any facts or figures to back themselves up, just reinforcing crass stereotypes. Nice one. You're hte kind of forward-thinking progressive people that will change the world.

I would rather that we spent money on this sort of thing than on insane salaries and pensions for TDs and RTE staff.

Many areas in the country are in dire need of this sort of investment, we should have invested in these areas during the "boom", along with education. I hope that there is a concentrated effort on behalf of the Gardai of the area to make sure nothing goes wrong with this.

Squandered in Limerick?, do you think there would be an area where it would be better spent, if so please make some suggestions. Where could be a better place to squander money than on educating and giving better lives to the people of this country, we will never attract new business if we don't have a highly educated workforce.

If you have an opinion to share then please do, but explain yourself. And making a crass remark to not count as an answer to a question.

Which I think is from Jesus' sermon on the mount where he announces that the poor are blessed.

Not in Freddie's eyes, it seems. Apparently the poor can go and fuck themselves.

Judging from your sig, you are a religious person.
How can your beliefs justify 'flushing out' disadvantaged people?
Surely your God would encourage you to help others, especially children?

This is clearly the first step in a large regeneration scheme (1.4M of 3B)
The ignorance of your post genuinely infuriated me.

You are either a troll or a genuinely horrible person, possibly both.*rolleyez*

I dont really begrudge it. but why is the government paying for it? if it is badly needed surely a private firm could build it and run it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

The fees in a creche are almost a second mortgage, hugely expensive.
However the staff are low paid, pretty much minimum wage even though they are qualified and have certs for the job.

If the State could set up branches around Ireland and run them just to break even so parents get lower fees and the staff get better wages it would be ideal.

The State doesn't always have a good record of providing services efficiently though.

And so there are more private creches. You ask why the State paid for it, I would think there are few enough in St Marys who can afford several hundred a month on creche fees, it's a struggle for most anyone working

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,809 ✭✭✭✭smash

I wouldn't ever say a crèche is a waste of money, especially in troubled areas. They teach children social skills and educate them. Something a lot of children wouldn't receive as much at home.

Well, privately run creches cost a lot of money for parents, it also wouldn't be a great investment for a Private firm to set up shop in a disadvantaged area.

Snide remark and you don't know Limerick as there is a large center between O'Connell St and the train station, easily walkable distance from the island

If this creche was setup on North Circular Road or Dooradoyle or Castletroy it wouldn't attract half of these smart comments

A decent childcare facility, yet it's a waste of money because it's in a poor area? Beautiful...
