This is the only way any kind of regeneration will work, from the ground up with the kids. there is no point in building new houses for people and just throwing them back in there. The social housing issue in Limerick is massive, and things like this are badly needed. St. Marys park was basically a large group of houses where people were thrown in together and basically left to their own devices. There is no quick fix to the issue, there are many fine people from St. Marys Park and the like who's good names and communities have been tarnished by the few scum that live there.

I find it unfair to say that it will be burnt down in 2 weeks, what about the great Library that was built beside Moyross, that was never set on fire and anytime I've been in there I've seen loads of kids in doing their homework or reading. And I am sure this Creche will be the same a great source of pride for the communities. Just because you come from a council estate that doesn't mean that you don't deserve to have all the amenities that everyone else has.

Actually I think its a great idea, very positive for the area. But only 45 children? I dunno how many kids creches usually have but that doesn't seem like a large intake.. What if there are more children in need in the area?

A crèche also gives some of the single parents a chance to better themselves, it gives them time to perhaps do a course or get a job.

Also the children get a good start on their socialising skills and an earlier start in their education,

This is a very good idea for a regeneration scheme with an aim of breaking the cycle of poverty. I don't think this is a waste of money.

I would rather that we spent money on this sort of thing than on insane salaries and pensions for TDs and RTE staff.

Many areas in the country are in dire need of this sort of investment, we should have invested in these areas during the "boom", along with education. I hope that there is a concentrated effort on behalf of the Gardai of the area to make sure nothing goes wrong with this.

Squandered in Limerick?, do you think there would be an area where it would be better spent, if so please make some suggestions. Where could be a better place to squander money than on educating and giving better lives to the people of this country, we will never attract new business if we don't have a highly educated workforce.

The fees in a creche are almost a second mortgage, hugely expensive.
However the staff are low paid, pretty much minimum wage even though they are qualified and have certs for the job.

If the State could set up branches around Ireland and run them just to break even so parents get lower fees and the staff get better wages it would be ideal.

The State doesn't always have a good record of providing services efficiently though.

And so there are more private creches. You ask why the State paid for it, I would think there are few enough in St Marys who can afford several hundred a month on creche fees, it's a struggle for most anyone working

I wouldn't ever say a crèche is a waste of money, especially in troubled areas. They teach children social skills and educate them. Something a lot of children wouldn't receive as much at home.

Well, privately run creches cost a lot of money for parents, it also wouldn't be a great investment for a Private firm to set up shop in a disadvantaged area.
