Rewiring heated grips

Currently the heated grips on my bike are connected directly to the battery so they dont turn off when i turn off the engine.

Twice in as many weeks ive killed the battery by not turning off the heat.

Whats the best place to connect the grips too so that they will turn off with the engine. Lights?

Easiest to wire them up to either the dips or the sidelight (if you have one).

Handy enough to do, just make sure you use a relay.

    What does the relay accomplish?

    What does the relay accomplish?

Seems to delay it drawing power on startup when the battery is at its highest load.

Stops your grips blowing a fuse off lights or whatever you get your switched supply that wont be rated for the load of the grips.

The relay is a switch that goes between the grips and the battery. You should put a fuse in line here too. Then you connect the other side of the relay to whatever you find a supply that switches with the key.

As Evil Monkey said, you wire that up to the ignition/side light, and it becomes a 'switch', so when the power is on on that part of the bike the rest of the circuit is live.

Means you don't draw directly from the lights, rather you wire it up to the battery directly, and put the relay in the circuit (and a switch).

Much safer, and means you can use any little power source to enable the grips.
