Hey would appreciate if somebody can help! I had an iphone 4 had it backed up on itunes, however I then lost said phone, I now have an old 3gs to cover me, when I restore the phone I only get past photo's (pre iphone 4 pictures) I have pictures of a friend who passed away on the them, is there any chance of restoring them or finding them?.. thanks

when did you last do a back up?
When my sister got her 4, we backed up her 3GS, then activated the 4 a few mins later, and restored from the 3GS back up and she got all her photos back.

what i would recommend over and above the iTunes back ups is to plug your phone into the PC and access it through windows and copy/paste your photos to your PC every week or 2 weeks etc

I backed up the iphone 4 a week before I lost it! I then used a 3gs to restore and it only restored my old 3gs pictures! I picked the last back-up file before doing this also.

I'm open to correction, but I don't think you can restore a backup from an newer generation device to an earlier generation device. If so, this would mean the backup file you restored was the last one taken from your 3GS, not your iPhone 4. Did you notice the date of the backup when you restored?

I'm not sure what happens to the iPhone 4 backup in this case. I assume it's still there and will work if you hook up an iPhone 4 or newer. I'd recommend finding all those backup files and backing them up just in case they get overwritten. I'm not sure how, but you should be able to extract your photos from them as well.

Get the iPhone backup restorer, free on the web.

Navigate to the last iPhone 4 backup (which is in user/library/mobile sync/backup) and extract from there. Your backup will extract to the desktop (or wherever you choose) and you may browse from there to your photo files.
