Atv2 mirroring

I just took delivery of new aptv2 on Amazon deal. It's sw ver 4.3 (2557) do i need to upgrade it to 4.4 to get mirroring to work from my ipad2 iOS 5. I can kinda get it to work but it's not great. I can get YouTube to play through it but not games. I can see the prompt for AirPlay but not the mirroring on off button. I bought it primarily for mirroring but would like at some stage to put xbmc on it. Will updating the atv2 sw prevent me from adding xbmc in the future.

yes, you will have to update the ATV to v4.4, which is not currently jailbroken (afaik) but when it is in the future you can put xbmc on it. what you're currently using is airplay, not mirroring.

I'm going to be doing the same as soon as i get my ipad 2.

120 do I update it directly through general/ update software option on atv2 or is it the same palaver as updating the iPad do I go through iTunes. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Is there a chance that sw ver 4.4 will not be jb or is there a chance that it will take along time. Then I would have to weigh up mirroring v xbmc + add ons.

Yes, just update via its own OTA s/w update.

I think with every software upgrade there is a chance that it will take a long time to JB or may not JB at all.

I've made the decision to stay on 4.3 with my JB just for XMBC - I mean a streaming video player that dosent play AVI is pretty much useless - really want mirroring though!

I think ATV's are a bit down the priority list when it comes to JB's but i'd be optimistic.


as an aside, has anyone ever jailbroken, updated then jailbroken again? i have my ATV just as i like it and to have to go through it all again after i update doesnt appeal. any way of backing things up?

Updated mine last weekend to 4.4 purely for the mirroring. It was a bit of a novelty for a couple of days. Real Racing 2 was excellent to be fair. Most games don't fill the tv screen.
Missed my xbmc etc after a couple of days and found out that season pass Is still able to restore you to 4.3. Felt I would get more use out of xbmc than the mirroring at the moment.
The downside was had to set everything up from scratch again but didn't take long.

Stay with the current version and keep your xbmc until they jailbreak 4.4 would be my two cents.

Forgot to mention Real Racing 2 is reduced to €2.99 at the moment. Well worth it at that price.

Thanks everyone for the advice, some conflicting I know, but it gives me the options. I could probably do without mirroring for a month or so, I might give the jb a go and see what it offers, I will be better able to make my mind up then come the time. I will probably be back at some stage for digout on the jb process.

Does anybody know if any music app with work for mirroring?

For instance I use we7 (spotify like music subscription). If I have a 4S/ipad - will mirroring work for this?

You only need AirPlay to work, not the whole mirroring shebang. As for apps, the list is endless. The default Music app, Audiogalaxy, gMusic. Use them every day.

Double-click home Button.
Scroll left to controls.
Tap AirPlay icon.
Enable mirroring.

Thanks Culabula - I don't know if the we7 app supports airplay (trying to find out), and don't have atv2 yet.

If airplay isn't supported, will mirroring work?

No, you shouldn't dwell on mirroring. This is just a device whereby the contents of your iPad are visible both on your iPad and your TV screen.

In some cases this may get video content onto your screen where AirPlay only does audio but for the majority of scenarios, AirPlay is king. The Airplay icon will appear when an Airport Express device or Apple TV 2 is present. Most music apps and radio apps support this.

I tried downloading both their apps for you but did not realise this requires a premier subscription. I therefore cannot test it (unless you wish to PM me your login for testing purposes, which I will then delete afterwards). I note they do not mention AirPlay in their preamble on the app store.

Regret to tell you, no Airplay support -to to any one of my five Airport Express or two ATVs. I suspected this from the AppStore. Doesn't mean they won't introduce it in the future.

Sh*te - had my suspicions also! Was hoping mirroring would do it then? Does mirroring not carry audio - ie is it display mirroring only?

I bring better tidings! I rebooted my routers -some issues today- and in actual fact IT'S ALL WORKING! Works perfectly.

No issues, all you need is AirPlay.

Can go buy an ATV2 now! No more plugging my iphone into my amp!!
