    Hi folks,

I have a 98 Starlet, and everytime I turn the ignition on, the wiper fuse keeps blowing. Checked all wires and nothing seems to be earthing the body.

I've tried unplugging the switch, wiper motors and the washer bottle motor.

Any idea's as I need it sorted quick

    Thanks,
    John

    John,

This would indicate to me that you do in fact have something earthing the body somewhere.

I had a similar thing happen me years ago when I knew very little about cars. The CD player fuse kept blowing every time I turned on the ignition and I kept putting in new fuses to no avail.

A friend's brother had a look at it for me and found a loose cable at the back of the HU was earthing the metal frame. He sorted it for me and it never happened again.

Are you sure you've checked in all possible areas?

Does it also blow when the wipers are set to off?

I would disconnect the wire going into wiper motor to see if the motor is shorted by retesting. If it still blows, I would disconnect the wiper control stalk and retest.

    Cheers for the replies,

I have tried disconnecting the Wiper Motor & Washer Bottle Motor, and it still blows.

I have tried disconnecting the switch, and it still blows.

Wipers are set to OFF and once the ignition is turned on, it blows straight away.

Cant seem to see where it could be earthing cause the wires are ran straight into the loom and they are all well insulated.

    Any other idea's??

If yo have a handbook, you could check to see if anything is running off that fuse.
Is there a rear wiper on it??????

Thats what I thought, I even disconnected the rear wiper and the washer motor bottle but it still blows.

I bet there is something else ran off the fuse cause I'm pretty sure all the wiper wires are perfect. If I had a wiring diagram I would be sorted.

Take a look at the loom as it enters the the hatch. Always a dodgy spot.

Its a 20A fuse, the wiper is only listed on the fuse box, but I'm wondering if there is anything else ran off that fuse??

I rang Toyota so they are gonna check the wiring diagram and get back to me, so hopefully I will get it sorted. I hope its something else earthing that is ran off the same fuse.

    Fingers Crossed!

Have you physically checked that everything else is working?

Yes, all the other electrics inside the car are perfect that I can think of anyway.

I've tried everything that I can think of.

Toyota rang back and still no help, all he said was there must be a short somewhere but I cant see anywhere that it could be shorting. All wires have been checked and they are fine, earths seem fine unless I've missed one.

Does the wiper motor need to be earthed or does it have an earth in the connector?

Anyone any idea before I lose the head with it....

Multimeter, start connecting or disconnecting things until short appears or disappears.
