After a thankfully short period of unemployment I have been offered a 6 month contract role which i am due to start on Monday.
However I have just been offered another role which is slightly better paying and is permanent.
I am in a dilemma. I feel bad about potentially screwing the agency that got me the 6 month role. Can anyone in the recruitment business tell me if this happens regularly? My head is telling me to put myself first, don't worry about the agencies.

I think you should do what is right for you in the long term. I'm sure there are plenty of people who'd bite a hand off for a permanent role, and i'm equally sure the agency could fill the 6month spot quickly, should you choose to take the permanent spot.

    I'd say give the agency who got you the 6 month a call and explain;
    1) Other job is permanent
    2) Better paying

In this environment those factors are vital and i'm sure they will understand.

The only reason you went to the agency was to get a job. Not to make friends. You've managed to get a better job than the one they got you. Take it. You'd be mad not to.

    Oh and congrats :)

man, dont give a crap about the agency!!
They would buy and sell your ass if they could.
They are only interested in getting their commission.
I've been screwed around by a couple of different agencies... not responding to mails, phone calls, but if their client wants to interview you, they will be bombarding you with calls/emails..

    look after yourself.
    Take the permanent role!!!
and if they get thick, fook them

    And they have a choice.

Get you a better offer from the 1st company, or wave the commission goodbye.

    Their call.

    Supply and demand ....
