    Hi guys,

My husbands laptop keeps turning off. We want to get someone to have a look at it.

A quick google has thrown up some companies in Galway that do laptop repairs but would love to get some boardsies recommendations. Even someone that does it from home.

    Many thanks,

    L

Sounds to me like a virus that was doing the rounds a while back.
Go to avast.com and install there antivirus product - the free version will do. Boot the machine in safe mode and run a complete scan.
Of course the other option is the battery is kaput - in which case you'll need to replace it.

    We have avast installed.

We have just bought a new battery a few weeks before this started happening.

It runs for a while and then turns itself off. It is overheating I think.

Moved to Laptops for initial diagnosis and suggestions. No reason to turn it in if you can fix it at home.

Is the fan constantly on? A laptop can switch off if it gets too hot.
Does it switch off immediately after startup or is it random?

Run some scans as suggested and see if that helps.
Read this first and do the steps

Edit, if you think it's too hot you can download a program called CoreTemp.
It keeps track of the temperature so you can check how hot it gets.

Try using the laptop with battery removed, only connected to mains, for a day. Does that work?
If so maybe there is an issue with the new battery. Did you keep the receipt?

    Many thanks Biko!

It turns itself off randomly. But once it goes off it won't switch back on until maybe the next day. Then it will stay on for a good while and then the same happens.

I will have a read through that thread!

It is not the new battery, its still happens when just connected to the mains.
It works on power saver but once another power option selected it switches off

It looks to be a software issue at this point. Unless fan runs all the time and laptop is hot to touch.

Check that all Windows Updates are current. Use this link
    windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Does it shut down gracefully (normally) or just go black?

    It does just go black.

I think we may have someone who will look at it (A guy in IT my husband used to work with) so hopefully we will get it resolved.

He is saying that it could mean it needs fresh thermal paste between the cpu and heat sink, the equivilant of open heart surgery for a laptop
