Expiring 2nd Provisional

So my 2nd Provisional is out on the 23rd November, as I've been a lazy/busy fecker the past few years I've neglected driving. Have done several lessons over the years and minimal amount of driving.

I was on the RSA site there to book my test to just try struggle through it, fail, get my 3rd Provisional and then actually drive and do the re-test. But it seems you can't check the dates available until you've paid, obviously I'm not going to pay if I can't get a date or cancelation date before my license is out, or is there anyway around this?

I was in the same position as you. You don't need to sit your test, but to apply for your 3rd you need to book a driving test.

I applied to the test and got 3rd provisional in July (after minimal driving a few years back) and got my first test date in October. In the meantime I got lessons each weekend. I found I wasn't ready for the test, so I delayed and got an extra month (November). I have my own car for practice now and I think i'm ready for the test. If not, no problem, keep practicing and sit it again.

In short, my advice is apply to the test, get your 3rd, and get lessons and get practicing. You can delay the first two dates you get, and if you then fail you can just reapply to the test and not lose the 3rd licence.

Proxy you are a legend! :D

So basically if I apply on Monday for a test at the end of January, I can still apply for my 3rd Provisional come the 23rd November once my license is up aslong as I have proof I have my test booked?

Yes that's all you need, the email that you have applied for the test, send it in with your application for 3rd provisional. You can then sit the test and pass/fail, or cancel. You get three dates anyway, if you cancel the first two you have to sit the third or lose your fee, but you still don't lose the licence. Get learning and good luck!

BTW, I see your location is The Tenters D8, I live very near there and have a very good instructor for Dublin that picks me up from there, PM me if you want the details.

After a hectic couple of weeks I've finally got around to booking my test. Hopefully we're on the road to success, literally!

    Good luck with the test.
Couple of points, be sure and read the rules of the road book, not just the questions. Read it 2 or 3 times.
If you sit the test and fail, or pass, go to the rsa website and search for and download the " driving fault marking guidelines " booklet. It will help you understand the marking sheet you got and give you an insight into what you need to improve on.

    Cheers.

My license ran out the other day and I'm planning to renew it tomorrow.

Few quick questions, do I just post off my completed form, 2 passport pictures, my 2nd Provisional, the email that proves I booked my test and a cheque? And do I just post it off to Dublin City Council Motor Tax Office down in Smithfield as that is where I've always gone?

And how much do I pay, €5 or €15? http://www.dublincity.ie/RoadsandTraffic/DrivingLicences/Pages/RenewYourLicence.aspx This link says for a 1 year license (which mine will be) it's €5 whereas the form says €15.

A one year third (or subsequent) learner permit costs €15.
    From: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driver_licensing/learner_driving_permits_for_cars_and_work_vehicles.html?searchterm=provisional
Learner permits are valid for two years (or one year in certain circumstances) and cost €15. It is free of charge to those aged 70 or over.

Exchanging your driving licence to show a change of name or address is also free of charge.

However, for full driving licences, the costs are follows (from here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driver_licensing/full_driving_licence.html )
The cost of driving licences is as follows:

    One-year driving licence costs €5
    Three-year driving licence costs €15
    Ten-year driving licence costs €25
Motorists over the age of 70 can get their driving licence renewed for free.

Exchanging a driving licence to show a new name or address or add a new category is also free of charge.

It's a bit of an anomaly, but it's €15 you need to pay for the third learner permit.

    Best of luck!
