alternator light lit up on the dash..died when driving to a mechanic..unplugged the bluetooth, turned off the radio..gave it a few minutes and it started again..obviously the alternator is causing a problem..would it be costly to replace..04 passat:(

Around €300 for the alternator and I'd say another €200 for labour. That would be from an independent and not a main dealer which would be much more expensive.

Alternators are not far off timing belts in terms of labour on VAG cars. When is the timing belt due? If it's soon, then it's well worth doing at the same time.

Not neccesarily the alternator, the bluetooth issue is a bit of a curve ball.

Get it checked by an auto elec before you spend.

Bosch units tend to give advance warning of failure. Certainly less than E300 regardless.

I'm having a problem with my 07 golf, jumped the car yesterday and drove around for a good 40 mins. I went to start the car today and couldnt start it, getting a rapid clicking sound coming from under the bonnet when I turn the key. Funny thing is the headlights come on and the interior ones as well when I unlock the car so its not completely dead. Anyone know if this could be an alternator problem?

Sounds like your battery to be honest. The lights will come on with a small bit of life in the battery but if I was you I'd replace the battery. It's the time when battery's need changing due to the cold.
