Is there a reason for a Humax foxsat hdr to switch itself on at about 17.00. And is there a way to disable it.
    Thanks

As John mac said, you could have had it set to record something and need to
Go into menu and Time and Disable the "ON" time and "OFF" time if it is Enabled.

Noticed the On time OFF time in the menuand disabled both. What is their purpose?
    Thanks

They are used to Power up the box on a certain channel at a certain time so you can record a programme on to external recorder.

This is a really really long shot but.... apparently it powers itself up every night at 2 or 3am to put those thumbnails onto everything it recorded in the last 24 hours. Is there any chance it has the wrong time, or is set to the wrong time zone?
(I don't know if its even possible to set the time zone or time, given that it can get all this from the satellite.) But I like the way it's clever enough to do its housekeeping when most people are asleep!

The OP found the issue with the manual switch-on timer and disabled it.
The 03.00 switch on is independent of this and is for housekeeping, including the thumbnail generation as you mention, plus a re-scan of the Freesat channels to add/amend/delete entries on the EPG.
The time on the box is set automatically from the satellite transponder time information and is automatically adjusted for summertime. No manual setting of time possible on the Humax box.
