Does that mean there's not going to be a Postgrad Rep? I wanted to run, but thought no one would vote for me so I chickened out :p

More concerned about the lack of a rep though. Postgrads tend to be ignored enough in college as it is.

I'm not completely certain, but I think it might be co-opted at Union Council.

Can the nomination process be re-opened? I'd know someone willing to run for that position.

Be nice to have someone from FEE involved but no, won't be me unless we couldn't find anyone at all to do it. Plus don't really know what the role entails, will have a read of the constitution.

Just wondering if anything has come of the confusion over the postgraduate rep position?

I know there has been similar situations in the past where people have stepped down and someone has been co-opted.

Robert Dixon, last year's Postgrad Rep, was coopted by Union Council today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Complete sham, not even remotely democratic. Bunch of undergrad reps voted for him.

The issue of how non-filled positions are filled (Co-opted, by-election etc) has been referred to the (as of yet unelected) Constitutional Review Committee on my recommendation today, so that should this issue come up again, there'll be a defined plan in place. At current any non-sabbatical officer positions that are unfilled due to resignation are co-opted, but the constitution is silent in the case of positions left unfilled due to no nominations.

Rob is first interpreter of the Constitution and he nominated Robert, so I think we could reasonably assume that there was a constitutional interpretation performed there - however any President's decisions can be appealed to the Electoral & Appeals Committee of the Boards of Trustees, by sending a letter/email to their secretary.

However, if someone had got their finger out and went for nomination, there wouldn't be a situation like this. Democracy involves work, you know.

That's a fair enough point and one that is practically impossible to disagree with. However I would much prefer to see a situation where the nominations were reopened (VOTE RON).

I don't know the guy who was co-opted but I'm pretty sure he was co-opted last year when someone else stood down? Correct me if I'm wrong!

Think we demonstrated we're not afraid of a bit of work with the petition no? I never heard anything about the nomination process even. That's my major complaint.

It was fairly well advertised throughout campus by those big white posters with the bold print on them, as well as via email.

But yes, it should have been a RON, as opposed to co-opting. Although, that means pushing out the election even further, leaving post-grads without representation at Union Council for longer. Maybe if the co-opted guy was made only an interim rep, and a full rep was elected at a later date it would be a better situation.

I'm practically living between the library and the canteen at the minute and have to admit I didn't see any of these posters. That though is my own doing.
(I'm waiting for LeixlipRed to tell us of the lack of posters on South Campus).

The co-option followed by the reopening of nominations seems the only reasonable way to deal with the current situation.

The reason RON wasn't an option was because we eloped together.

Can post-grads vote in their relevant faculty rep elections? Or are we only allowed vote for what would have been the election now replaced with the co-opted guy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,134 ✭✭✭Duddy

Nope, postgrads can only vote for the postgrad faculty rep

What a waste of energy, how do we know if these people are suited to their roles as leaders,
it's not like they provide CVs like in the real world.
Student politics is a glorified popularity contest, whoever shouts the loudest(and with most articulation) wins.
You would think that students would be more mature and realize that the SU rep system is little more than a CV +1.

It's not like CVs in the real world are particularly useful indicators of ability/experience/common sense either. Maybe it's just the people we used to hire though :p
I agree about it being a popularity contest but I'd say so is Irish politics in general.

I will try to make this but seeing as I don't have a vote(postgrad)
it would be somewhat futile, might alter my opinion on the whole rep system though.
Also how long would something like this take? I have a lecture at two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 782 ✭✭✭tootyflutty

Hustings are usually an hour or two.
As to them being a popularity contest, that generally applies to those who are not interested or do not attend hustings. But I for one, was completely undecided on some positions last year until after hustings, and having to talked to candidates to see exactly what their points are.
I am actually running for a position, and honestly hope that if I get deemed elected, it will be becasue I plan to be very active in my position and have points that students in my faculty feel are relevant to them. Not because of it being a popularity race.

Do we have to know which faculty election we vote in or will we be told? There is a slight lack of clarity as to whether history is in arts or social science :P (it's listed under arts on the website, but people can study it as past of a social science degree and it used to under that heading iirc).

Also, the person who used Socially Awkward Penguin in their posters is clearly awesome.

Postgrads have probably never voted for the postgrad rep though, seeing as the position was always co-opted by Union Council :p

If anyone hasnt made their mind up yet about who they are voting for please consider Cynthia Okafor.

    Thanks :P

According to my facebook news feed, Oisin Nolan got Social Science rep. I thought Ruta would have been a shoe-in for it!
