    Hi,

I would really appreciate some help with choosing a HM to aim for. I have taken up jogging/running in recent years and really enjoyed my first ever official run at the Dun Laoghaire Bay 10K run earlier this year. I then applied for the Frank Duffy 10 mile and the Lottery HM in the phoenix park over the summer. I ran the 10 mile but it took lumps out of me, knees were screaming at me by the end, really didn't enjoy the whole experience. Since then either one knee or the other has become painful by around the 5/6k mark, especially if I run at a decent pace. I pulled out of the HM and haven't run at all now for about 4 weeks.

But, I would still love to a HM! So I aim to basically start from scratch and try to do the build up properly, following a 12 week schedule that will ideally have me covering the distance at least once before race day (which I hadn't done for the 10 mile run).

I'd love to have a HM to aim for in around 3 months time - Late Jan/Early Feb. Any ideas? I know the weather is bad around so there may be none in Ireland - any foreign ones maybe I could plan for? Are there any local (to Dublin) 10k's in December that might be an interim target?

    Any advice would be great.

    C

Hmm, that's ages away :( I'm getting the feeling there is nothing between Waterford in Dec and Wicklow in late March.

There is the Aware 10k in Dec, Dungarvan 10M in January and Torrevieja Half Marathon in Feb which would be an ideal progression of races if you wanted to take that approach.

The Half is completely flat (think there is like a 6m variable throughout the entire course) and weather at that time of year is perfect for fast running.

My advice would be dont rush the half. Slow steady build up of training to prevent you getting injured again and throw in races every few weeks to keep your interest (5ks etc)

What is the hurry in running the half? better to get consistent training in to build up your aerobic base to benefit you more in the long run

Check the ART events sub forum or Runireland they can prob a more comprehensive list of races for you

Torrevieja looks fab :D Hmmmm :)

I guess the rush is that I want to have something to aim for, to motivate myself. That Torrevieja date would be grand actually, would give me 14 weeks, excluding two around xmas. Must check flights :D
