    Really good article

    Tut tut. Grossly inaccurate article.

smaller competitions taking place regularly in Ireland.
    :D

Edit, thought they meant the UFC had regular events in Ireland. Read it again and they're on about Irish shows.

Very good except for this bit...
The most famous MMA competitor outside the industry is Alex Reid , former partner of Katie Price.

Its a shame to think that Alex Reid is the most famous.. suppose that's because women know who he is whereas them may not know who Rampage Jackson or Randy Couture are, even though they may have seen them in blockbuster films!

I was thinking the same thing myself!
    Great article apart from that.

I took that as not the most famous person in MMA, but the most famous celebrity who also trains and participates in MMA.

Actually when I read it again I think you are right, but technically Reid is not outside the industry as he is still 'competing' as far as I know... If you can call that 'fight' with Barrett 'competing'

I think they mean the most famous MMA fighter outside of the MMA world.
ie Alex Reid is an MMA fighter, famous for being married to Jordan.

It excludes the MMA fighters famous for being MMA fighters

Silly question - but what is small joint manipulation?

You can't manipulate the fingers or toes.

If we were grappling, what's to stop me grabbing your wee finger and snapping it? That's my understanding anyway. Some would say that foot stomps should be banned for the same logic, as it has the potential to break toes etc.

    I may be wrong though.

Edit, Shazbot beat me to it...

Oh my god that guy was some idiot!
That just shows what the uninformed perception of mma is like. I'd love to hear that whole conversation. Probably make me smash my computer though!

That was a couple days before the UFC was in Ireland. Ais Daly's Dad rang in afaik and they had Wayne Mcullough on defending it. But it was mighty cringe worthy listenin apart from that.

Its nice to read an article in popular press that isn't biased or full of lies. Very good article written in a nice neutral stand point.

was pleasantly shocked to see this in the irish times, i used the opportunity to bring up the topic to some friends and family and unfortunately its still incredible how misunderstood the sport is and how difficult it is to change that perception of "cage fighting". one article at a time is a good start though. kudos to the author.

    Let's be honest here.
It's a very good article. It paints a clear picture of MMA. And the masses could learn a lot from it.
But to say its not biased isn't really true. The author isn't in a neutral position. I'm not saying anything they said wasn't true. But they are not a random member of the media, their prior exposure to MMA is the reason they have a rounded view of MMA.

Why some random sports writer hasn't copped this niche yet is beyond me.
