With a bit of luck we qualify for the Euros and have more great days like the video below.

Would really give the country the well needed lift it needs in these days of nothing but bad news and unemployment .

    Enjoy .

Will people go to the pubs in 2012 in the same numbers as is 1990 ?

I was 18 in 1990 and doing my leaving cert, by 2012 I will be 40 and have a family, and a job.

I watched most of the games in pubs in 1990 and it seemed like the whole town was in a pub.

I can't remember if it was only students\unemployed in the pubs or did everyone go.

Just making the point that while I was younger I liked going to the pub to watch a match but now I would not bother, much prefre the comfort of my own sofa.

But the pub trade has changed in 22 years, so will they be packing them in the same way as they were in 1990 ?

that's called getting old, don't worry i am in the exact same boat myself, i was around that age back then as well.
remember italia 90 was a world cup, the euros are an inferior competition, the game against Romania was a once off, i don't think we will see the pubs as full or the celebrations as wild....younger people today 18-20 year olds have less of a liking for the local pub than in 1990.

One lives in dread that a decent showing Euro 2012 might inspire Roddy Doyle to write another touching working class novella with a football tournament theme.

    Come on Estonia!

Might dust off the inflatable shamrock.

    I can't believe I was 48 in 1990, only seems like yesterday.

If you're slagging The Van you need your head checked, what a film and book:)

I'll be 32 next Summer so I'll still be in a position to party, if we qualify I'm going to Spain for it and enjoy some sun while watching the football, not sure I can handle it pi*sing rain every day. The Summers seem to have changed from Italia '90, I remember the Summers then to be so much better than the rainfests we get today:(

The pub trade has changed a bit in those years alright but it isn't the reason for me thinking we won't see such numbers and widespread joy/scenes as in the video.

    1. We've had a fair bit of sporting success since then, (mainly in other areas, rugby, olympics etc but it all trickles down) and the novelty factor is gone.
    2. We're nowhere like the nation we once were (not saying better or worse as I don't know myself) We lost that pureness/innocence that is evident in this video during the "good" boom times.

Great vid, a mate sent it onto me last night, have to say a little tear rolled down the cheek!
Chr*st I hope we make it through the play offs.

Love that video anything to do with 1990 World Cup sends shivers down my spine and makes the hairs one the back of my neck stand up.

Have to say I think the pubs will be packed for it if we do qualify they were packed in 2002 for the last major tournament we qualified for and will be again. Ireland might have changed a lot since 1990 but there still that passion there for supporting our own and football and any good reason to have a good session just look at Arthurs Day.

    Very apt username :)
My point was moreso aimed at the scenes outside of the pub rather than numbers watching it in the pub.

Was amazing to see the amount of women out celebrating, that isn't aimed at being sexist, but I think it's fair to say the 90 gripped the whole nation not just the football supporters.
If we were to succeed again, we'd have people jumping on the wagon, but not in the same numbers, not with the same enthusiasm and the level of success would have to be a bit greater to get people going imo.

Shamelessly stolen from planet rugby OP :p

Don't think we'll ever get that for qualifying for the Euros, but who knows.

I remember all 3 world cups, although 1994 and 2002 a little better as was bit too young to appreciate the 1990 one.

I am pretty sure the Romania game was on a Monday or Tuesday and it went to Peno's and me and my Dad watching it in our 20inch TV at the time when got home from school. Ah the memories.

I remember going into school the day after the Romania game and mocking the Romania Goalkeeper with my friends for going the wrong way for all the Irish penos (think was 4 of the 5 but still unlike Bonner who could have saved at least two more) not realising why keepers picked a side at the time.

I will never forget when we beat Italy 1-0 that was crazy night in local back home and place was buzzing.

I think 2002 would have been the same only for the time difference with every game being on so early and pubs not open etc. I remember everybody having Irish flags showing outside people houses just like you would see for GAA teams on All Ireland final week.

I like my sports from Rugby to Golf to Motorsport to GAA, but nothing has a greater buzz then when Ireland gets to major championship.

That' why be great lift if Ireland could qualify for Euro 2012 next summer. With all the doom and gloom by God we could do with some cheering up.

If there is one game I would love to have remembered it would be England in Euro 88.

I say for your avid Irish supporter at the time that must have been an amazing day.

It's hard to believe that 7 minutes and a spinning header were what was between us and semi final spot in our first major tournement against the best Dutch side ever and McGrath also hit the post if I remember correctly.

The 2 finalists were also in our group.
