What version is this?

I saw someone with a version of linux, unlike what I have seen before.

It basically consisted of a background screen with 4 boxes or windows within it. Each window more like a basic command prompt window, each with different functions. Was quickly able to for example get to a web explorer etc.

I know my description is probably terrible but it might make sense with someone!

You didn't say how graphical it was ...

    Anything like this?

    No it was less graphical!

Didn't appear to have anything akin to a start menu type affair or anything. Just few windows, each minimilastic almost like 4 windows on the desktop with a command prompt type appearance.

I am sorry for not making it clear!

Maybe it was just something like "Search & launch" ..... a KDE Desktop set up and not distribution specific.

No it was a blank slate desktop with 4 windows on it. There were no icons or start menus etc. Just the 4 windows.

It was probably a tiling window manager (dwm, awesome, xmonad etc). I don't think you'll ever be sure given how each can be made look almost exactly like the other.

Here's what dwm looks like on my laptop: http://i.imgur.com/UhATd.png.

    Thats actually quite close!

Except there was a bit of space between the windows!

Whats is that made up of in terms of shell etc?

    Emacs, cmus and rxvt-unicode.

It could even be a the basic x windows system. Really, there's no way to tell. Any lightweight window manager could look like that.
