IoS 5 - Battery problems

Hi, I upgraded to iOS 5 last Friday, and I've noticed my battery runs down within a few hours now, I've had to charge it twice or even 3 times a day since Saturday.
Has this happened to anyone else?
(I'm presuming there is a link between the upgrade and the battery running down so quickly)

2-3 times a day is pretty mad. IOS5 lets you have location services switched on all the time - this might affect your battery life. Try turning this off.

You could also try switching off wi-fi sync if it's on.

Or maybe you have Personal Hotspot on all the time - this could easily drain your battery 2-3 times a day.

I have IOS5 with Loc Services on and Bluetooth on constantly and my phone still only needs charged every 2 days.

What model phone do you have and how old is it?

I have exactly the same problem. My phone runs down in 4/5 hours since I upgraded to iOS 5 where before I could get up 36 hrs with light use

Location services is set to off
Personal Hotsport is off & never used
    WiFi sync is off
There are no Apps running in the background

The phone is the iPhone 4 and is just a year old. Luckily I have an extended warranty.
I'll ring Apple later when I get a min and let you know what they say

I agree, it feel like I charge battery more often now.

I notice a slight difference in batter usage. Prior to ios5 I could bring the phone out for the day without being near a power socket and maybe by bed time I'd have been down to between 45%-50% remaining capacity. Now I think last night it was about 36% when I plugged the phone in before hitting the hay. I did just notice that my personal hotspot wasn't turned off since the weekend so I'll see what difference that makes.

Bear in mind also that if you're operating on 3G mainly your power usage will be worse. Since I changed job and have access to the corporate wi-fi network, my battery life seems to have improved. Sending data over wifi is less taxing on the battery from what I can see.

I can see how that could be an issue for some alright but I'm on hi-speed WiFi 99% of the time.
If it was just a slight drop off in battery life I could live with it but this is a pretty dramatic fall form what I had before the upgrade.

That is a dramatic drop in battery life. Going on the usage stats on my iPhone 4, my usage time is very similar and my standby time is marginally less. I'm putting that down to the push connection for notifications and email.

There might be some kind of a bug in your software back ups. I had to restore my iPad as a new device as I couldn't download apps from the app store. If I were you I would restore as a new phone. If the issue persists then you might be looking at a hardware fault.

Thought my upgrade went without a hitch - had no issues with Apps, contacts or anything and there is nothing running on the phone that should cause this kind of battery depletion.
Going to give restore a try and if that fails I'll get on to Apple for a replacement - cheers!

My iPad was going without a hitch as well until 2 days ago! Restored this morning and all is well again.

check your usage stats in settings, if the standy time and usage time matches, power cycle or soft reset the phone. this happened when i first got my 3gs and in effect the phone was never on standby when it said it was, ergo battery drain.

I used to get this problem before I upgraded to iOS 5 but thankfully it has disappeared. I'm finding my battery life is the same, if not slightly better, but I have all data switched off most of the time so it's hardly surprising.

Tried both the soft reset and restore options: let see how it goes over the next 24 hrs
Thanks for the advice & suggestions :)

each time i've upgraded to a major iOS, 4 and 5, the battery was crap if i restored from backup, restore as a new phone has always improved the battery for me

I noticed something funky going on with my battery % after I updated. I got into work one morning and the % was down to 78%, usually it would be about 90%. I closed all the apps and restarted the phone and the % then showed up as 91%. It might be a bug in displaying the %, although ios5 does use up more juice.

turn off local weather in the weather app. huge drain as it uses GPS location everytime you check your notification in notification centre.

iPhone 4, have it about 1 year, am on the 3 network.
Charged the phone yesterday evening, made a call, sent a few texts, battery was at 79% when I went to bed. came down this morning, battery at 4%!!

I've turned everything off, notifications, location services, personal hotspot etc.

Never had any issue like this before I upgraded...

I'm having a similar problem since updating to IOS 5. Started out this morning with 74% and I'm now down to 17% despite the fact I haven't used my phone at all today. All notification, location, wifi etc are turned off.

Also has anyone else had trouble with their phone overheating since they updated? Woke up yesterday morning, phone was plugged in over night to charge, the phone was roasting and battery was at 13%. Thought it might have had something to do with the fact the phone was under my pillow but the same thing happened again yesterday evening when the phone was just sitting in my pocket with no apps open.

Aftering restoring there seems to be a general improvement with my battery issues.

It's at 81% now after a day of my usual work calls & WiFi use which is pretty much was I was getting before the update

Thanks for the suggestion guil :)

There's almost certainly an underlying issue for a lot of people, myself included. I've tried restoring etc. and a few other things but what seems to have, if not sorted it then at least alleviated the problem, is going into Settings > General > Time and Date > and disabling "Set automatically". I've noticed that when that is enabled it seems to use Location Services an awful lot.

Not ideal but it helps until the problem is properly sorted by Apple.
