    That's 60,000 miles a year.

    5,000 miles every month.

    1,154 miles every week.

    165 miles every day.

    Would you?

If it has service history, why not?

    Nope.

The vast majority of those miles have proably been done on a motorway as that distance commute would be crazy otherwise.

I'll say one thing. If anything goes wrong, at least you'll have several thousand pounds to fix up stuff.

    Motorway mileage I'd imagine.

I bought an old reps car, a March 2006 Passat TDI and it's up to 133K miles now.

I cover about 25k miles a year too.

I reckon as long as it's covering the miles it will run ok. If it stops driving as much I reckon issues will start to crop up. It needs to be driven

There's a guy in the UK with a Mucielago on 200k + miles, I'd imagine he's spent as much as the car cost on maintenance but goes to show you can get mega miles out of anything with proper maintenance...

There is only circa 70 miles of motorway in the north....

Avoid like the plague me thinks ;-)

I'm not sure of the exact figure, but a relative told me recently of a 3 to 4 year old Audi A6 that had been traded in that was heading for the 300k mark. It was being past to the trade, but the thing was that the car was so well maintained and in such good condition that it could have easily lost 100k and still have been sold has a high kilometerage(!) motor. Here is hoping it went to a honourably dealer.

Way back when fishtits wore a baggy green suit to work, and there was "trouble" north of the border, I had the pleasure of carrying out an inspection on a Landrover 110. At that time the military did a NCT/DOE type test internally every 90 days.

I can remember chasing one particular vehicle from various Barracks to Border posts over several days before finally getting my hands on it in Castleblaney during a patrol handover.

It had covered more than 98,000 miles in eleven months from new...

It basically was on the road 24/7 save for a change of crew and a refuel.

Apart from the odd ball joint it was happy out.

Ive been doing similar mileage the last six months and I honestly couldn't see someone doing that day in, day out for 2.5 years. It's a killer. That would lead me to think it may have been more than one driver possibly. If it was a pool car or something like that I wouldn't risk it. You'd really have to check it out very carefully.

And you won't get much of a discount on the aul VRT because of the mileage...

Maybe good value up north, but certainly not here...

My 2004 diesel A4 has 170k miles on the clock. Full stamped history from new, which i continued on with.

Car runs like a swiss clock, and has never missed a beat. Even after I loaded it with 50 quid of unleaded last year.

My two and a half year old diesel Astra has done190k km, biggest problem with it is that the previous driver drove it in to a towbar hitch. Modern diesels can take that easily.

A lot of repmobile type diesels being sold secondhand have had their mileage "corrected" to pretend they've done less.

My current car has 168k miles and still going strong. But its only a 00 so its really quite average for that sort of years.

My uncle bought a 04 Vovlo s40 in 2008 with 140k miles on it at the time. I thought thats was big miles for the year but obviously not :D

Anyways both are running like clockwork with the vovlo cruising past 190k miles at the minute :pac:

Bargain, the mileage wouldn't put me off at all once its serviced.

just wouldn't be my cup of tea down to the amount of washed diesel up there, thats just me though.

You'd be surprised. I drove those mileages for ~13 years,200+ miles a day.. up to 80k miles a year and all B roads and boreens!

Well that's paid to do it. But as a commute I couldn't see anyone doing it. So that leads me to think one nutter or maybe a few drivers still:)

Actually while I think of it I remember reading about an X-type jag that was a reps car. The guy preferred to go home at night rather than stay over. At the end of the lease it had north of 300k miles or something nuts like that.

I used to have a driver who lived in Balbriggan and was an area manager for a large supermarket chain. He looked after all the stores in the West/North West so would set off every morning from Balbriggan to Galway/Sligo/Letterkenny etc, and back home every night.

That customer changed all their cars at 65,000 miles / 105,000km so he was getting a new car every 13 months.

Had an office based driver who got a new car after 2 1/2 years. Her old car came back to us with 183,000km in the 2 1/2 years as she lived in Borris in Ossary and comuted up to Dublin everyday. That car was in perfect condition - very little stress on the engine pounding up and down the motorways everyday.

I was in a taxi in Belfast a few years ago, a MkIV Golf estate.

It was the first one I'd seen on the road. Got talking to the driver, he said it was 4 weeks old, and showed me the clock - there was near 30K miles on it.
It was a depot owned car, and 3 drivers were working it round the clock.

30K in a month - all round town, that's was gonna be one tired car in quick time, you'd be better off buying an ex-hire car that that! :-)

On top gear many years ago there was a man who had a Peugeot 309 diesel with big mileage on it (over 400K miles) and on the original engine, gearbox and clutch. They asked him how he rack up such mileage and he replied that he had a 240 mile round trip commute to work. Work was...driving a truck!

He was hoping to get the 309 to 1 million miles but conceded that he'd probably need a new clutch by then. The programme was on about 17 years ago, I wonder what became of him and his car.

Also, fairly recently there was a Rover Montego featured in Car Mechanics magazine in their 200k mile club regular feature. Except this car had a lot more than 200 k , IIRC it was 800k. I'm not sure if it was on the orginal engine and gearbox but it had had a lot of bodywork done due to rust.

And in my opinon, even with all the doom and loom about diesel unreliability, modern car engines (i.e a lot newer that a 309 or Montego) are better still at shrugging off high mileage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,924 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

My skyline has 220k km in click. It is import so it was 100% clocked even before came to Ireland. So only Jesus knows what is the real millage.

For a sports car I find it a lot.

I was newer put away by high millage. I am more scared of semi lowish or normal milage cars. Usually they will be at the point where owner got wrid of it, because it needs work to be done.

As long as it's a tidy car, millage is not important.

I drove Courier in the early 90's
I put over 130k miles on it in 12 months.
Van was mint after 12 months as it was kept spotless and serviced every 5k miles.
Wouldn't worry about that mileage at all once service was looked after.
There is a civic in the states with over 1 million miles on it.

here's the SAAB 90 high mileage page from 2005:

    http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/faq/miles/All.html

the top car went on to do 1m miles.

    http://www.jsonline.com/business/29181064.html

    My 900 is at a measly 190K.

PS: I know it's less impressive for older cars to be high mileage, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

150k isn't a problem if properly maintained, needs to go to a low milage user though. A low mileage car could have more problems caused by short journeys, stop/start driving & lack of maintainance. I drove a hylux with 500k km in Australia. It was running like a dream, if it was closer to home I certainly would have considered buying it, as hire company said it was due retirement that year.

Pretty sure its common for Garda patrol cars to see 200k miles in a year. Or it was in good times when replacements were sitting waiting for the current cars to be 'used up'

I was driving a 2012 van last week with 235k kms on it. Another smaller 2011 van had 270k kms. The remarkable thing about the smaller one, a Nissan NV200, is it has the Renault 1.5 Dci engine. Supposedly crap, this van has needed nothing but routine servicing. All of the vans would be mostly motorway driving.

I had a 1992 Fiat Ducato van from new.
13 months later it had almost 160k miles on it. All done by me :)

** Just remembered the number now

I've a 131 with 112,000km on it. It broke down once at 34,000km saying the power steering was gone and that I had 4 flat tyres. Garage put a brand new battery in it and it has been fine since.

Also have a 05 traffic with 250,000km all that ever happened to it was a snapped throttle cable (I think) and the inter cooler came disconnected but I fixed that on the side of the m50. It has the 1.9 dci.

Also have two kangoos 06 and 07 with 80,000km and 90,000km respectively and both are in bits because of mainly country roads.

    I have no idea
But it gor traded in on March 1993 for a new one
if my memory serves me correct the new one was 93c3863,

I put a further 90 odd thousand miles on that before I called it a day.

264k miles in a year and 9 months was more than enough for me :(
My eyes still suffer the effects.

I remember in 92 I put 160k on the first van
The local patrol car only put 78k on that with several drivers. :)

2 actually. First one was replaced at 25k under a recall. So 300 odd k on her now.

    Indeed.
Fermoy - Larne - Glasgow - Larne - Fermoy was almost a nightly run.

Fermoy - Larne - Irvine and back was a 19 hour run inc. 2 ferries.
