Contacts query and syncing issue - please help?

I have an iPhone 3GS and iPad. I got d new version ios5 at weekend on both. I lost all my music on both when doing this. Is there anyway I can keep my music when I get new software? Also I Have my contacts down to 250 in my phone? When I turned it on I had 550 contacts in my phone. It has taken me hours to get this back to…

Also I Have my contacts down to 250 in my phone? When I turned it on I had 550 contacts in my phone. It has taken me hours to get this back to 250. I am wondering is there anyway now I can save the 250 and not get 550 if I was to sync or download more software again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
