    i run about 5 x 10 kms a week. for my height and weight thats roughly about 700 calories a session so x 5 is 3 500 calories expended a week. now im fairly liberal with what i eat and i eat well in excess of my daily requirements yet the training seems to keep the weight off me. whats the story here?

    Does your body burn calories after running?
    Yes, your metabolism is higher than at rest (i.e., VO2 - energy expenditure) and doesn't come back to baseline straight after a run. It can take 24 hrs for VO2 to come back to baseline (training status, genetics, fitness level, age play a role in regulating this).

    In your case, although you eat more than you need, you don't put on weight. This suggests that your resting metabolic rate (energy expenditure at rest) is high. In other words you burn more calories at rest compared to someone who has a low resting metabolic rate ("slow metabolism"). I'd try to not eat in excess though... as, when you'll be older, your metabolism will slow down, you'll be eating in excess and putting on weight. When you say in excess is it "clean" food or junk too?
