So I'm saying goodbye to my 05 Golf....but can't decide on a replacement...

I really like the Scirocco http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Scirocco/Sport-1./131713127920219/advert?channel=CARS but can't decide on this car, or BMW 318 ES 2008 with 27,000km with a load of extras (park assist, phone kit, new tyres, wood finish)

Based on price, tax (which I think is 302 on both cars), running costs, reliability etc... which should I go for?

Scirocco. No competition between that and a 318. What's your budget?

    Budget in or around 19k.

Power wise, would the scirocco not pale in comparison?

The beemer has 140 odd bhp and if it's the engine I'm thinking off in the VW then it has 122bhp I think. On paper the BMW might beat it but the Scirocco would feel quicker due to it's lighter weight and turbo engine.

Still on the look out for a car... found a 09 golf 1.4tsi 122bhp I'm considering taking a look at. How would this compare power-wise to my 1.4 80bhp?

Also, can anyone advise on how flexible pricing is on used cars these days? Is there a % discount I should have in mind?

You have 19K to spend on a car and you are considering a 1.4 Golf?

    Madness!

What kind of driving do you do? Is it mostly urban? If so then a diesel may not suit, but plenty of interesting petrol stuff to choose from at that budget.

By the way, when you are spending 19 grand on a car, tax should not be one of your main concerns.

Obviously 122bhp will feel a lot faster than the 80bhp version, particularly because its turbo charged and will have a nice bit of torque.

There is no set discount when buying a used car, it depends on price but at your budget it probably would not be unreasonable to get a car for say 18000 or so if it is advertised for 18750/19k.

18/19k is my budget, though it would be nice to spend less on a car that is still pretty new. I'm thinking 16k....

I do about 30,000km per annum, mainly motorway driving. Ideally I would find a fabulous diesel, circa 2009 onwards... I find my golf sluggish and boring so would really like something a bit more exciting.

Thanks for the links, given me some good ideas. I have to buy through a main dealer though, so they're non runners.

This is an English spec one so no cruise or multifunction display but it might be worth a look if you want something for motorway work as its well suited to it.

Might not be to your taste. It's not the best looking or does it have badge kudos but it gives a lot of power/low tax/newness/spec for the money.

Think that Alfa has the 2.2 petrol engine in it though unfortunately... Pity as it's a lovely car otherwise!

Thanks for all the suggestions...I've actually decided on a Mini. I don't want a saloon as I'm really the only one ever in the car, also it's the only hatchback that hasn't bored me driving it.

I've seen one I like in Merlin Motors...has anyone dealt with them in the past?
