Thinking of new MTB

    Thinking about up grading my current hard tail to either an

    I'll be doing some single trails, little downhilling, some dirt jumping.

    I have a feeling the AM ticks all the boxes but is it an overkill unless I'm going to be hitting big DH sections. The XC is slightly lighter, better at climbing but is it also weaker? Can it hit the DH and jump sections?

    Any yee see these bikes in the flesh, cycled them?
    All I see is great reviews online. Certainly great bang for buck

    Both look good with the am is the better all round choice for you.
    Would you spend a few quid more and buy a bike in your local bike shop?
    You have somewhere to go for repairs etc. and will get far more help with any problems you might have.

    I have the XC, but would agree with maddness, skip Canyon and goto your local bike store. Suggest either Eurocycles (Richie) or Expert Cycles (Alfie) or Think Bike (John) will give you best service.

    Have you an issue with the XC that you propose to use a LBS?
    I already have a Canyon road bike and I cannot fault the company. I don't see the extra benefit for the extra cost when buying from your LBS.

    I can still bring the Canyon to the LBS for repairs; they are fitted with main brand components. If there is damage to the frame, I can’t see a LBS been able to help with any bike; they would just strip the bike down and send it to the manufacturer. With the Canyon, I would strip the bike down and ship the frame back to Canyon for replacement (at a reduced price) or possible repair.

    Both fine bikes, you cannot go far wrong with either, have only seen a couple in the flesh but the owners seem very happy...

    120mm is plenty of travel for what you will be hitting on the XC trails, certainly the official ones it's more than enough...

    Though you seem to be worried by the climbing potential, so what would be your spilt between freeride/downhill and XC/racing?

    I use a Giant with 100mm front&rear suspension which is great for XC/trail riding, ok it won't take big hit's but I am not interested in DH racing...

    I'll more into freeride then XC. Don't have any interest in XC racing. On that thinking, the AM makes more sense. For the fact you can lower the front forks to 120mm, would improve it's climbing abilities.

    I would agree, the AM seems like your best option with the adjustable travel which will sharpen up the head angle on the bike for climbing..

    Canyons are great value. But theres a big difference between road and MTB. I'm on my 3rd derailleur hanger in 8 weeks riding the XC. I did purchase the bike with a spare hanger. However ordering another hanger took almost 2 weeks delivery and over €10 shipping cost. If you’re not bike repair savvy then it’s off to the LBS for said fitting and another cost.
    Now on my other (LBS) bike same issue, I dropped in they had the part in stock, fitted it straight away, a few other checks charging only for the parts price. Along with a decent chat and some general biking advice, some say priceless.
    I now ask myself will Canyons higher spec parts make me a better rider, hardly. Could I live with XT instead of XO brakes, probably.

    Will I buy the next bike from the LBS, definitely.
