You do not need to purchase a replacement recovery disc to return your computer to proper operating condition unless the drive is corrupted. The HP Recovery Manager, installed on your PC, allows you to recover the original operating system, or create a set of recovery discs from the special recovery partition on the hard drive.
To determine if the HP Recovery Manager is operational, press the power switch to turn on the computer, and then repeatedly press f11 during the startup. If the Recovery Manager is operational, the computer will display a prompt to either (1) recover the operating system from files stored on the recovery partition, or (2) create a set of recovery discs which does not require the purchase of a replacement recovery disc.

There's a recovery partition built into your Harddrive.

may be a stupid question lads but what does a recovery disc do?

Zweton if recovery discs didn't come with your computer, you're meant to create them. The PC should have prompted you. If your box was opened at all by your retailer and you have no been prompted, contact them. HPs typically only permit 1 copy of the discs to be created, ever.

James Recovery Discs are your driver and operating system discs. They used to be supplied with your laptop (and some still do, eg. certain samsungs) but most OEMs have done away with it to save themselves money. Consumers are then required to create their own restore discs. This is handy if you have a Hard Drive Failure and so you can no longer access the recovery partition \. Creating these discs when you first get the laptop and update it fully is strongly advised. Most PC Shops will offer to do it for you, and some of the time it's not even an exercise in fleecing, but a guarantee the **** will get done right. Especially for anyone who still has trouble telling the difference between storage and ram.......... So, for most people.

If I'm not mistaken though, in Windows 7 press Start/Windows Key and type in Create. Press Enter. Have blank DVDs at the ready. Usually 3 or 4 Blank DVDs. CDs: a lot.

yes i MEANT to create them but i didnt, recovery manager is not working either its just stalling on a blue screen.

I think the hard drive is dead! Anyone know any software that i can boot from cd rom to verify this? Maybe a Linux live cd? not sure about the different versions.
